Digital Gravel’s Back to School Sale

Posted on 15 September 2008 by Van

Digital Gravel is having a 50% off sale that ends tonight at 12 am PST. I was a bit puzzled at the Back to School theme. But, its never a bad time to stock up on some apparel by Recon, 10 Deep, Mishka, etc. Especially when the discount is fairly deep. On a side note, I slept on getting the Cosmo Mop tee earlier on. It’s pretty much sold out in every colorway except canary yellow.

Skins & Punks

Posted on 02 September 2008 by Lee

Gavin Watson’s photographs have been hailed by Terry Richardson and were the visual inspiration for last year’s This is England. His newest book, Skins & Punks comes out next month and it is beautiful. More than a document of youth culture in 1980s Britain, Skins & Punks is a document of exuberant youth.

Set against the gray tones of Thatcher-led England the working-class kids in these photos pop off of the page in a way that could only be captured by one of them. That one was young Gavin who at the age of 13 decided to buy a camera instead of the binoculars he had been coveting. Right around that time, Watson also started to get into Two-Tone and skinhead culture. This book digs into his archives and, with little in the way of text, tells the story of Gavin and his pals from 1978-85.

Working-class England always took special pride in its appearance and the skins in this book illustrate this perfectly. Classic brands like Doc Marten, Fred Perry, Levi Strauss, Ben Sherman, Crombie are all over this book making it worth checking out if only for the fashion.

See below for some pics…

Boy A

Posted on 21 June 2008 by Van

Based on the award winning novel of the same name by Jonathan Trigell, Jack (Andrew Garfield) is released from prison at the age of 24, having been institutionalized for most of his life after he and another boy murdered a child, when they were themselves children. The film follows Jack’s difficult attempts to readjust to the world outside of confinement and restart a life which never really got going. Under the fatherly mentor-ship of Terry (Peter Mullan) his parole contact and social worker, he experiences a coming of age, which would normally have happened years ago. But forces from the past are constantly upon him, as we learn more about the events leading up to the crime which has ruined so many lives, there is an increasing sense of suspense, intrigue and ultimately doom: the tabloid press and Terry’s real son are not going to let things lie.

Watch the trailer and be compelled to head to your local indie/foreign film theater asap. Then read the book by Jonathan Trigell afterwards or vice versa.

Spring Cleaning Sale @ Commonwealth

Posted on 06 May 2008 by Van

Commonwealth is having a HUGE Spring time cleaning sale this weekend all the way through the 18th. If I heard my coworker correctly, he walked out with a pair of uptown supremes for under 50 bills during the last big sale. Don’t sleep! This sale is not just limited to citizens of DC metroland and Norfolk, VA. The sale is applied to the online front as well. This is the perfect time to try on a pair of CLAE’s.

Airboard by Ki-Seung Lee

Posted on 28 April 2008 by Van

With Ki-Seung Lee’s Airboard, leisurely reading or web surfing is now like an 8 way adjustable seat. Conforming to wherever you rest or sit, the Airboard’s height can be pumped or deflated accordingly. The design itself is streamlined with a pump, cushioning and board all in one small package. Those that frequent hot spot coffee bars and mattress surf can rejoice. However, I’m seeing the Airboard as a great tool for music venues. Serato djs normally have to find that “right” spot to situate their laptop. This may be the answer. I know Jesse Tittsworth would be dying to have one of these. Check the back for more images.

Custom Moleskin Notebook

Posted on 28 April 2008 by DT

So awhile ago we posted up custom Moleskine notebooks that were available through engraveyourbook.com. So I decided to give it a go and get one made. Above is the result of that and I gotta say it looks pretty damn good. I didn’t want to do anything too complicated so I simply went with the Killahbeez logo. Definitely I have to recommend this to people looking to get their custom artwork onto a notebook. It was hella easy and mad quick, the instructions and design requirements are pretty straightforward. So get your customization on playas and playettes.

KIKS TYO x AKI HOSHINO X YONE “Sneaker Lover” Series 3

Posted on 11 April 2008 by Van

Available now for pre-order is the latest installment of the Aki Hoshino x Yone x Kiks Tyo “Sneaker Lover” series. To date, this is probably my favorite of the entire series. Especially with the Merlin Bronque-esque bird’s eye view shirt. Completists with expensive taste would’ve already pre-ordered all previous tees, dvd and photobook. Anyway, the pre-order started today and ends on April 21st or when supplies last. I’m glad I held out. Getting sucked into the “gotta catch them all” bug is painful on the wallet. Make the leap to see some pics.
