Posted on 08 January 2009 by atek

In conjunction with Commonwealth DC, Stussy DC will be celebrating the 44th Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama on January 19th.

A limited edition commemorative t-shirt to honor Barack’s historical campaign will be released during the event.  Artists Bun B and DC native Wale, will be giving special performances as well. The events at DC’s premier boutiques have always packed the crowd in the neighborhood of Adams Morgan — early arrival is strongly recommended!

Manifest Hope Gallery

Posted on 28 December 2008 by atek

Shepard Fairey unveiled a huge Obama piece for the Manifest Hope Gallery during the Democratic National Convention in August.  After a successful show in Denver, the art show will be making a stop in the nation’s capital during Barack Obama’s inauguration.

From January 17-19th, the gallery will be open to the public at a location along the main strip of Georgetown.  For more news and updates regarding the art show, please visit Manifest Hope’s website.

This is going to be great way to kick off inauguration week!  You do not want to miss out on this event!

The pictures below were taken in Denver:

I hope Fairey releases a new Obama piece in DC.

Art plays a pivotal role in creating cultural momentum. The MANIFEST HOPE: DC Gallery celebrates that role and shines a spotlight on artists who use their voices to amplify and motivate the grassroots movement that carried President-Elect Barack Obama to victory.

MANIFEST HOPE: DC gathers together a diverse array of the nation’s most talented visual artists under one roof to mark this monumental achievement in our nation’s history and encourages artists and activists to maintain the momentum to bring about true change in the United States.

Along with its partners, MoveOn.org Political Action, the Service Employees International Union and Obey Giant, MANIFEST HOPE: DC, will issue an inspiring visual call-to-action, encouraging a redirection of public energy toward true reform in three key areas:

Health Care Reform
Workers’ Rights
The Green Economy

The MANIFEST HOPE: DC Gallery will be open to the public in Washington, DC for the days preceding the Presidential Inauguration, Saturday, January 17th, 2009 through Monday, January 19th, 2009 between the hours of 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.

Smithsonian Institute: Obama x National Portrait Gallery

Posted on 19 November 2008 by atek

Word on the streets is saying that the Smithsonian Institute is interested in purchasing Shepard Fairey’s Obama picee for the National Portrait Gallery.  The price tag for this is $75,000.00.  Will Fairey’s work be displayed in the hallways that house famous portraits of Ab Lincoln and George Washington?

We’ll keep you posted.  This is an exciting time to live in DC.

Thank You America

Posted on 05 November 2008 by atek

Thirty years later, we have finally reached the promise land MLK. This is a significant event in our history, an epic moment that I will remember for the rest of my life. Being born and raised in the suburbs of Washington, DC, my family and I had never gone to a Presidential Inauguration. On January 20, 2009, that will change. I will be lining up the streets of the Nation’s Capital to see our next President-elect take office.

During the last twenty-one months, I’ve been active in spreading his message to people I know, leaving work early to see him speak twice in public, voted during the primary and general elections. Going forward, I hope that everyone will continue to vote in the future because every vote counts!

Congratulations to our 44th President, Barack Hussein Obama, for being the voice of Change!

April 3, 1968 - “I See The Promise Land”

Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Yes we have Dr. King!

November 4, 2008 - “Yes We Can”

“Change has come to America. If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible. Who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

The road ahead will be long, our climb will be steep, we may not get there in one year or even in more term, but America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you. We as a people will get there.”

- President Barack Obama

Tuesday Buzz: Wale

Posted on 14 October 2008 by atek

<br />

New York and Atlanta are home to many talented artists in hip-hop music. Unfortunately for Washington, DC, the city was only known for housing dubbya, the most popular resident on Pennsylvania Avenue, and as Murder Capital during the ’90s for crime rates.

Currently, DC or as locals would say “the DMV” (the metropolitan areas of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia) has earned a respectful place on the map for hip-hop fans, all thanks to a young man by the name of Wale.

Wale Folarin generated quite a buzz from the release of his first mixtape in 2006.  After emerging on to the local hip-hop scene, The Washington Post featured him in an article and dubbed the local artist as “The Great Rap Hope” in 2007.   Within two years of his first mixtape, Wale has been on tour with Mark Ronson, rubbed elbows with heavy weights Kanye, Jay-Z and many others.  He has been featured on cable networks, MTV and BET.  He has appeared in many magazines, including interviews and ads for LRG, Levi’s Denim, and streetwear brand 10 Deep.  Recently, Complex Magazine selected Wale for a special feature in the October 2008 issue.

He remains true to his roots, as many references to the DMV area are made in his music. This may be one of the best narratives to describe the lifestyle on the other side of town. The part of town that is located far away from the glitz and glamour of politics. The city’s go-go inspired music is also infused into Wale’s beats. The mix of go-go’s percussion instruments and Wale’s lyrics created a unique sound that attracted Record Executives.  The talented kid from Maryland joined Interscope earlier this year.

He is currently working on his debut album, which includes prodcuers Mark Ronson and Virginia native Pharrell Williams. The much anticipated album will feature “Nike Boots” as the first single.

In honor of Wale’s hometown, Director Chris Robinson, will be shooting the video during Howard University’s Homecoming this week.

DMV, bring out your Nike boots to the set on October 15th and stay tuned to killahbeez.com for more Wale updates!

More and more sneaker events are easing their way into the DC-metro area. And it seems to be at a linear pace with boutiques such as Kickballers, Cmonwealth, Major that have opened shop. I’m quite excited to see an event comparable to the Dunk Exchange. Being that I like vinyl toys and art prints, I’m even more excited this event will feature Bill McMullen.
