Alright Vancouver, another long weekend is upon us, although this is rather an awkward one as it takes place mid-week. In any regards this means one thing, that Danse Contact and Killahbeez are back to bring you another dope ass party. Please note that for this party we have changed venues, going from The Modern to The Metropole aka The Met located in Gastown.

The Met is a smaller more cozier venue, perfect for all our peoples and music heads looking to hear some great jams. For this party we’ve booked U-Tern (named URB’s Next 100) and another Vancouver favourite, Eric Zee.

Images from last nights MEN and Gossip concert at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. The band MEN was amazing, their set was around 45 minutes long. The band consists of Michael O’Neill, Ginger Brooks Takahashi and JD Samson of Le Tigre, collectively they play some damn good ass live dance music. During MEN’s set members of Gossip joined them on stage holding signs / props in the background, Beth Ditto also was holding a sign as seen below. As for Gossip, what can I say, nothing short of amazing. Beth Dittos’ voice, what you hear on CD is essentially what you hear live in concert, even if she was just coming off of a cold as she would explain to the crowd, giving everyone the heads up in case she couldn’t hit certain notes. Honestly you couldn’t tell.

Saturday, October 18th Vancouver got to experience a taste of awesomeness known as Dragonette when they stopped in town at Venue. This was the third or fourth stop on their North American tour which was announced earlier this month. I have to say before going into the show I had developed a slight kindergarten crush on Martina Sorbara and her voice and I was not disappointed in the live aspect of it all. It’s hard to describe this woman, as she seems to have a vortex about her that draws you in, whether she realizes or not. A fan yelled out “You’re so cute!” and her response, a brief stage dance to get everybody laughing.

Their set started off with the single from their first album, “I Get Around”. I’m sure you’ve heard of it and not even realized it. Being that this is a fan favorite it was only natural that the folks in the venue cheered and sang along with Martina. For their set performance the band had gone back and forth on songs from their debut album and latest effort, Fixin to Thrill. From the debut album they performed the aforementioned “I Get Around”, “Take It Like A Man”, “Black Limousine”, “Competition” and “True Believer”. Full set list is below.

The night ended with the song “Fixin To Thrill”. The song started off on this heavy spacey synth sound that wasn’t recognizable, that is until the guitar riffs came in and everyone realized what was about to played. The place went off. When the song ended folks just didn’t want to leave and cheered for an encore and after a few minutes they received one. The band performed a song that’s on neither album and I thought I heard Martina say it was one of her songs, but I’m not completely sure.

As for the pictures below, the venue we were shooting in is quite dark and they have potential for great lighting, but clearly opt not to use it, hence the majority of my shots turning out black & white. A few days ago we were invited by Timbre Productions to check out the Juliette Lewis concert that took place in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom. Here are some of the photos from that concert, I didn’t get a chance to stick around and listen to too many of her songs as we had that Random Long weekend part down at The Modern I had to make my way down to. But the three or four songs I heard weren’t too bad, the crowd was semi-thin, as this was a long weekend, Thanksgiving weekend to be exact.

Apologies on the quality of the photos, it was dark, like black dark for a good portion of the 1st song and we were only allowed to shoot 2 songs.

On Friday, October 2nd the Burns / Deadmau5 “For Lack of a Better Name” Tour stopped through in Vancouver at the UBC Thunderbird Arena and the production was put on by Blueprint Events. First off the production was amazing, the sound was amazing the venue was insanely massive, as it is a hockey arena. DJ Timeline opened the night and was followed by Burns and then the headliner Deadmau5, the crowd was amped and everyone was dancing throughout all three sets. This weekend Girl Talk stopped in Vancouver to play two straight gigs, one was on Saturday night and the other was on a Sunday night. Tickets for the first show sold out so quickly that Sealed with a Kiss was able to add another night, which also ended up selling out as well.

If you’ve never been to a Girl Talk show, here’s how you should prepare: hydrate yourself prior to the show, wear little to no clothing, prepare to sweat your ass off and good comfortable dancing shoes. Here’s what you can expect, tons of mash-up music, tons of dancing, maybe a boob or two, but definite some side boob, and of course dirty. sweaty. peeps. for a lack of a better term, but its’ all love cus the parties at his shows are always crazy. This is the third time I’ve caught his show, the first was last year at the same venue, Commodore Ballroom, the second was this past summer at Sasquatch! Music Festival, where he tore shit up on the second main stage. This particular night was no different. Before Gregg Gillis aka Girl Talk even stepped out on stage, people were frantically trying to find a way to get to be on stage for his set, during his set, people were jumping the photo barrier pit and hoping onto stage, only to be taken down by security and forced to go back out into the crowd.

He played a lot of his usual mash-ups, but there were some new ones that I hadn’t recognized, overall though he doesn’t change things up too much and sticks to a formula that he’s been successful with and keeps the crowd dancing they asses off.

On Saturday night the Pet Shop Boys made their scheduled “Pandemonium” tour stop in Vancouver at The Centre for Performing Arts. The concert was a sold out event as ticket buyers were being turned away at the will call window.

The show started when two females walked out on stage with colored boxes on their heads and taking their place on a synthesizer. Moments later Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe both walk out, also with boxes on their heads and took their position. They opened the concert with songs from their latest album, Yes. I was only able to stay for the first few songs but they opened with “Love Etc.”, “All Over The World”, “Beautiful People” and “Did You See Me Coming?”, not necessarily in that order. It was definitely cool to see people standing up out of their seats and dancing in the aisles and such.

This past weekend we had our third Random Long Weekend party, which is a series of parties put together by Danse Contact, The Hastings Set and ourselves here at Killahbeez. Earlier in the day we all received news that DaM Funk wasn’t able to make it due to passport issues, which the show will be made up down the road, but with that news, we thought to ourselves, Fuck it let’s party hard and open up the guest-lists and not charge cover until 11pm. The result. One good ass dance party. U-Tern, Niña Mendoza and DJ Static held it down and had the main dance floor bumpin as well as people going buckwild downstairs. On Sunday night I had the opportunity to photograph Franz Ferdinand at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. Despite it being cold and raining fairly hard the concert was sold out and folks were amped for the outdoor concert. This was by far one of the hardest shoots I’ve done, being that it was raining and I was fumbling to try and protect my gear and the band playing fairly far back of the stage, which makes sense as that allowed the band to be under shelter as oppose to fully out in the open to the elements. I didn’t get a chance to stick around for a review because I had to run off to The Modern for our Random Long Weekend party, pics for that coming up soon as well. Vancouver, this weekend is our third official party and for it we’ve teamed up with Danse Contact and The Hastings Set to bring Stones Throw recording artist DâM-FunK. For those that remember or participated in the Gastown Shuffle months ago, the shuffle ended in one crazy ass party at The Modern where DâM(Dame)-FunK and Peanut Butterwolf played. It was that night that Vancouver got a taste of DâM and wanted more.

What better way to end the Summer then with some Funk / Boogie / Dance by DâM. Joining him will also be Niña Mendoza (www.ninamendoza.com) and U-Tern (2009 URB Next 100 | www.utern.ca). So make it a Random Long Weekend and join us at The Modern down in Gastown.

This past weekend saw Rock The Bells make a stop in Vancouver, taking place at the great outdoor venue, Deer Lake Park. There was an air of sadness surrounding the event, before it even started, as early that morning I found out that Baatin from Slum Village had passed away. Currently there are no details on the matter, we’re not sure if something happened en route to Vancouver, or in Vancouver. Nonetheless, respects to a legend, R.I.P. Baatin.

Respectively folks in attendance weren’t sure if Slum Village would still make their scheduled performance, but 2:30 rolled around and there they were, T3 and Elzhi, coming out and putting on a great show for everyone, performing all the classics, then taking a moment to remember their friend. I definitely can say I had chills during the whole time, just seeing these guys putting on a brave face and performing hard was nothing short of amazing.

There were a few changes in the lineup, as Canadians have come to expect when attending a hiphop concert. Customs can be a bitch to get through or in some cases not get through. Early in the day we were told that Pete Rock wasn’t going to be there, as well as K’Naan, Big Boi and KRS-One. B-Real was brought on to help Supernatural with hosting, but that was scraped and instead fans were treated with a full on performance of classic Cypress Hill joints. RZA was also added to the bill and he brought up Ol’Dirty Bastards son, he had a frightening resemblance to his father. Reflection Eternal had initially canceled as we were told by Livenation staff, but at the 11th hour, Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli made it to the stage and performed a slew of songs, but honestly did anybody hear any Reflection Eternal songs? I’m pretty sure they just did all Talib Kweli’s songs, correct me if I’m wrong here.

The final act saw Nas and Damian Marley together on stage, each performing their respective classics and essentially amping the crowd. Everyone pushed in closer and closer to the stage to try and catch some pictures, video or to simply take in the moment. It was a great way to end the festival.

Although our bill wasn’t as great as the original announced line-up, there’s no doubt that it was still a great festival. Check out a few of our pictures below and hit our flickr page for more pictures, lots more.
