The year was 1994. The setting, summer time in New York City. This comedy / drama takes you on a journey through the main character, Luke Shapiro, who spends his summer before college selling weed throughout New York City. He ends up trading weed for some therapy with his shrink (Ben Kingsley), which honestly was pretty funny, the conversation the two have throughout the movie. Luke also has a crush on his shrinks’ step daughter and his high school classmate, Stephanie. The reason for the film name The Wackness, is because of Luke’s inability to see things positively and just living in the moment, as Stephanie puts it, “Your all about the wackness, while I’m all about the dopeness”. In addition to this coming of age story this film definitely throws you back to the Golden Era of Hip Hop with tracks like: “The What”, “Summertime”, “The World is Yours”, “Can I Kick It?” and a few other tracks that aren’t actually on the soundtrack such as Pharcyde.
