Mixtape Monday: Q-Tip & Dj Dub ‘Ill Vibe’

Posted on 06 October 2008 by DT

It feels like it’s been a minute since we’ve done a hip-hop mix, but quite honestly I haven’t come across anything quite inspiring, until now that is. Q-Tip is the shit, ’nuff said. He has a new album coming out and teamed up with Dj Dub to present an array of songs that he’s been featured as an artist or produced. This soon-to-be classic features new, classic and unreleased from Q-Tip. Artists like Busta Rhymes, Andre 3000, Kanye West, D’Angelo and more all make appearances on this momentous mixtape.

Review: A Wonder Summer’s Night

Posted on 16 July 2008 by DT

Saturday, July 12 - GM Place, Vancouver. The final stop on the “A Wonder Summer’s Night” tour, which features the fabulous Stevie Wonder and his 14 piece band and three backup singers, one of whom was his daughter Aisha Morris - more on her later.

The show starts off with Stevie talking about his fond memories of coming to Vancouver with Ray Charles when he was a young boy and how he enjoyed the city. He also took a moment to talk about the late great jazz pianist / composer Oscar Peterson and dedicated this particular show to the legend.

As he sat down at the keys, fans were eagerly anticipating which one of his soulful joints he was going to start the show off with. The wait ended when he went straight into “As If You Read My Mind.” Fans start going crazy and I have to admit that when he hit the chorus, I had chills down my spine. To hear his records a 1,000 times and then to hear him live was amazing for myself. I’m not a religious person, but this was one of those “religious moments.” He kept the vibe going by getting into “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” and then into “Did I Hear You Say You Love Me.” It was clear from then that he was doing his hits off of the 1980s album with the iconic album cover, Hotter Than July. Next off the album was “All I Do,” and the performance was powerful, moving and soulful.

From there he moved on to “Knocks Me Off My Feet,” the quintessential love song. This is a baby making jam for sure. With lines like, “There’s something ‘bout your love that makes me weak and knocks me off my feet,” what girl wouldn’t fall in love with that?

The Pocket Karaoke

Posted on 14 March 2008 by Mona Alice Oakenfold

The Pocket Karaoke

Um, you can file this one under “useless gifts.” Sarah Lewitinn, author of The Pocket DJ - oh, what’s that? You’ve never heard of that book? That’s because unless you can’t decide a simple thing like whether or not you like a song, it’s pretty much a complete waste of $10 - has released a second book: the just as useless Pocket Karaoke!

So, this is what her book publishers were probably thinking: Imagine you’re at a crowded karaoke bar, and you really want to wow your crush with the perfect song. But what would that song be? Do you want to sing a song by Gladys Knight? Or would Stevie Wonder be a better choice? Omigod, I don’t know! I WISH I HAD THE POCKET KARAOKE!

And so, Lewitinn (aka Ultragrrrl from Spin magazine) was handed a book deal, and soon there will be copies of this paperback in Chapters’ half-off bin.

If you’re really interested, the Pocket Karaoke is 320 pages of the best karaoke songs, which allows you to search by artist, genre and occasion. It also lists the places to find the best karaoke gear! Score!

Well, in case I’ve convinced you to buy the book, you can check it out HERE.
