Both Dave and I agree this is Shepard’s best print for 2009 (our own opinion of course).  Coming from a slight hint of Burmese in our blood, we got a lot of love for Shepard’s latest work.  But for me personally, I’m in love with Shepard’s revisit to the same colorway as the ‘Peace Goddess‘.  Well the gold variant anyways.  The ‘Burmese Monk‘ print measures in at 18″ x 24″ and will go for $45 this Thursday at a random time.  Even with 450 units, I’m sure this will sell out under 5 minutes.  Best of luck to all that want this one.

As reported from Van, OBEY teamed up with Levi’s for a capsule collection. The capsule collection includes eight pieces, two pairs of denim, two denim jackets, a flannel shirt and three tees, with a price point between $34.50 to $148. A special poster was released along with a live installation by  Shepard Fairey in Times Square Levi’s flagship store last night.  Below are a few images from Times Square:

In recent news, Shepard Fairey’s Obey brand has teamed up with Levi’s on a small capsule collection.  As you can see in the gallery below, the collection consists of a flannel woven shirt, two pairs of denim in the 511 and 514 models, two jean jackets, and a few t-shirts.  Shepard lends his touch on the authority of denim in the form of a variety of patches and easily recognized industrial propoganda art .  And while maintaining a limited edition appeal, the collection will be readily accessible.  The Levi’s x Obey Capsule Collection is due to hit Levi’s Soho, Time Square, Santa Monica, San Francisco, Chicago and online on October 29th.

To coincide with the launch next Thursday, Shepard will be producing a live installation at the Time Square Levi’s flagship store.   And shortly afterwards, there will be an in-store signing for the 4 limited edition art prints (on a first come, first serve while supplies last basis) for purchases made.  In other words, expect to see a camp out in front of the Time Square Levi’s.  Personally, I would love to get my hands on either one of the jean jackets and possibly the Levi’s logo with Obey’s Andre the Giant collabo stencil heather gray tee.

Shepard Fairey will have a second solo retrospective, the Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand Exhibition, at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA on October 17th.  The exhibition will run through January 21, 2010 to celebrate the artist’s work during the last two decades.  Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the show will explore illustrations, screen prints, collages, works of wood, metal and canvas produced by Fairey.  Visitors will be able to view such projects as Andre the Giant (1989) to the OBEY GIANT posters.

A special print has been produced for this special exhibit at the Andy Warhol Museum, which will be released on October 18th.  The print is only available in person at the museum.  In honor of Andy Warhol, Fairey created an alternative colorway to the Global Warning image to pay homage to the iconic pop artist.  Fariey will also install various mural projects throughout Pittsburgh by October 17th.

Warhol is one of my favorites artists and Fariey doesn’t fall too far behind him as well. If you’re in the Pittsburgh area, this is an exhibit not to miss!

Shepard’s collab with war photographer, Al Rockoff continues with the 5th Duality of Humanity print.  I’m not certain how many Duality prints will complete the series.  But each succeeding DoH print just gets better and better.  A run of 450 prints measuring in at 18″ x 24″ will be available for $50 at a random time today.  Fans will just have to keep their eyes peeled and fingers ready repeated f5 mashing.

Back in March, Shepard Fairey and the Obey crew placed Obey Giant posters outside of Home Slice Pizza in Austin, TX. Fairey also placed installations around other parts of Austin, including Lance Armstrong’s Bike Shop: Mellow Johnny’s. The video features a live footage of the installation at Home Slice Pizza during the South by Southwest music festival.

Available today with an undisclosed time frame is the latest Obey print in collaboration with graf sites, Guerilla One and The Seventh Letter.  I love how the steel beam reps Guerilla One, but not sure what symbolizes TSL other than the hit on the bottom right?  Not much info is given in terms of how limited this print is, time its dropping nor price.  However, we do know that both Obey Giant and Mad Society will have this print available for supporters to cop.  On a side note, anyone see a resemblance to the DJ Shadow x Obey print, yeah???

The artwork features J Dilla, who of course was one of the greatest music producers and unfortunately passed away from lupus on February 10th 2006, can’t believe its been 3 years already. The February 17th release of N.A.S.A.’s The Spirit of Apollo has five interchangeable covers featuring art by Sage Vaughn, The Date Farmers, Marcel Dzama, Shepard Fairey and Mark Gonzales.  The Spirit of Apollo has cameo vocals by Lykke Li, Kanye West, Santogold, Karen O., Tom Waits, George Clinton, M.I.A. and other artists.  Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (Ze Gonzales) teamed up for this collaborative effort to provide their love of Brazalian funk and soul.

Shepard Fairey is back with another poster featuring President-elect Barack Obama’s official Inauguration poster. 10,000 posters have been printed for the historic moment on January 20, 2008.

Posted in November, I wrote about the Smithsonian Institute’s bid on Fairey’s original artwork of Barack Obama.  As expected, the Smithsonian purchased Fairey’s original Obama artwork to include in the permanent collection of Presidential Portraits by Inauguration Day.  I can’t wait to visit the National Portrait Gallery!

As reported yesterday, the Manifest Hope art show will be heading to the district during President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration week.

An online contest for the DC show has been announced today.  Manifest Hope DC is currently accepting art submissions centered around three categories:

• Manifest Opportunity – Stimulating The Green Economy
• Manifest Change – Health Care Reform
• Manifest Unity – Protecting Workers’ Rights

Judges will select 15 winning pieces to be featured in the DC show.  The list of judges include Shepard Fairey, Spike Lee, Anne Ellegood, David Rolf, Eric Hilton, Laura Dawn and Van Jones. Please click here for contest rules.

Shepard Fairey unveiled a huge Obama piece for the Manifest Hope Gallery during the Democratic National Convention in August.  After a successful show in Denver, the art show will be making a stop in the nation’s capital during Barack Obama’s inauguration.

Rick Stengel, Time Magazine’s Managing Editor, appeared on the Today Show to announce President-elect Barack Obama as the person of the year in 2008.  A new iconic image of Barack Obama created by Shepard Fairey is featured on the cover as well.

Here is an excerpt from Time Magazine:

“Our cover portrait is by the street artist Shepard Fairey, whose roots are in the skateboarding world and whose early poster of then Senator Obama became the great populist image of the campaign. With this cover, Fairey has now created a new iconic image of the President-elect — a rich, multilayered poster that echoes but then expands on his original.”

This was a no brainer, as we have witnessed a historical moment in our generation.  Forty years after Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech, America has finally “reached the promise land”.

As stated in my earlier post, Barack Obama is the quintessential gentlemen that topped my best dressed list. He also receives the number one spot in my list of inspirations for 2008.

A few days ago we posted N.A.S.A.’s track “Gifted”, seen here, and mentioned that they’re getting to release their album The Spirit of Apollo in February. The first official single and video is for the song “Money” which features David Byrne, Chuck D, Ras Congo, Seu Jorge and DJ Z-Trip. The video also features artwork by Shepard Fairey, directed by Syd Garon and Paul Griswold. The single “Money” digitally released yesterday is also bundled with this video as well as a remix by The Count of Monte Cristal.

So by now you’ve seen that famous Shepard Fairey print Barack Obama. A lot of peeps since then has tried to emulate and imitate, including yours truly on some pictures. Anyways this is by far the easiest way to achieve that look that I’ve come across. Here’s a plug-in developed by Dubi Kaufmann for Mac users only. This is a plug-in for the application Photo Booth, which comes loaded on all Macs. Once installed you can have your own look-a-like image. It’s a bit finicky and requires a certain background and blah blah blah. Anyways have a look at the ones I did of myself. I had to go shirtless in the top picture, you can see a bit of my tattoo on the left shoulder.

Word on the streets is saying that the Smithsonian Institute is interested in purchasing Shepard Fairey’s Obama picee for the National Portrait Gallery.  The price tag for this is $75,000.00.  Will Fairey’s work be displayed in the hallways that house famous portraits of Ab Lincoln and George Washington?

Shepard Fairey’s Billy Idol print is fresh to death, but this Johnny Ramone one leaves me speechless.  Two colorways will be available tomorrow.  The gold and black are exclusive to Obey Giant while the red and black one goes on sale at Johnny Ramone’s webstore.  I’d be blessed if I can get my hands on either colorway.  At retail of course

So we’ve all seen the “Hope” t-shirts and posters that feature the face of Barack Obama designed by Shepard Fairey. Well, street wear company Ludwig, has flipped the script on the whole thing and brings Sarah Palin to the forefront in a similar design with the words “NOPE” replacing “Hope”.
