The Wackness

Posted on 05 August 2008 by DT

The year was 1994. The setting, summer time in New York City. This comedy / drama takes you on a journey through the main character, Luke Shapiro, who spends his summer before college selling weed throughout New York City. He ends up trading weed for some therapy with his shrink (Ben Kingsley), which honestly was pretty funny, the conversation the two have throughout the movie. Luke also has a crush on his shrinks’ step daughter and his high school classmate, Stephanie. The reason for the film name The Wackness, is because of Luke’s inability to see things positively and just living in the moment, as Stephanie puts it, “Your all about the wackness, while I’m all about the dopeness”. In addition to this coming of age story this film definitely throws you back to the Golden Era of Hip Hop with tracks like: “The What”, “Summertime”, “The World is Yours”, “Can I Kick It?” and a few other tracks that aren’t actually on the soundtrack such as Pharcyde. Check out the trailer above or visit the film’s site here.

Throwback Thursday: Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band

Posted on 22 May 2008 by Van

Brooklyn is home to many talented musicians. Name a genre and the BK got it covered. Biggie, The Rapture, In Flagranti, Hercules & Love Affair… The list can go on, but let’s focus on today’s Throwback musical outfit. I discovered Dr. Buzzard’s Old Savannah Band from listening to Dj Neil Armstrong’s “Original” mixtape cd over at Reed Space a few years back. Original is crack and so is the single, Cherchez La Femme. The band may have only seen three years of success before going their separate ways. But watch the video and see why they’ve been sampled by the likes of De La Soul, Doug E. Fresh and Ghostface Killah.

Throwback Thursday: Bobby Caldwell - Sampled for the Greats

I’m a bit of a crate digger (a necessity if you produce), but I’ll start of simple with my first contribution to Throwback Thursdays with a double dose ode to one of the most soulful Caucasians of all time, Bobby Caldwell - Funny thing is, alot of folks didn’t even know he was white until his first video dropped because his single/album cover only showed a silhouette of him. Shout out to JT and Robin Thicke, and NO shout out to YBT (Young Black Teenagers)…LOL Two of my favorite tracks of all time, Common’s “The Light” produced by my man Dilla and Biggie’s “Sky’s The Limit” produced by DJ Clark Kent both sampled Bobby Caldwell -“Open Your Eyes” and “My Flame” respectively. And for good measure I’ll toss in his timeless hit “What You Won’t Do For Love” which has been sampled numerous times by numerous artists (2pac’s “Do For Love” and Luniz “Playa Hata” being a few of many).Click on through for all the tracks and make sure to peep again on Mixtape Monday for a 40+ song mixtape with all classic soul joints (many of them sampled for big hip hop tracks) by my man Dj Pump.

Finale Design: ‘Gotta Have Faith (dreams)’

Alright I’ve been keeping my out for this shirt for a loooooong time now. I first heard about this piece back in November or possibly December. Finale Design, a local Vancouver company as I found out when I emailed them about this piece, has dropped this homage to Biggie Smalls. We all know the song “Just Playin’ (Dreams)” where Biggie profeses his love to, *ahem, certain R & B female singers and that’s what this whole shirt is based off of. In addition to some of the names Biggie drops, Finale Design went ahead and added a few of their own.

Get familiar with the song and then head on over to Digital Gravel and order yourself this ill shirt.
