An amazing video from director Jaron Albertin, whoms directed videos for Metric, Cut Copy, Junior Boys and many more, has just directed a new video for Todor Kobakov’s “Toronto Stories”. The single is from Kobakov’s critically acclaimed solo piano debut Pop Music. The video paired with the song are incredibly haunting and go so well with one another. Well 2009 is nearing it’s end and everybody has dropped their lists of favorite albums, remixes, songs, etc. (Check our top 10 albums of 2009 here) Generally we compile the Boner Jams based on downloads for the month and make a mini-mix, for this one we’ve taken a slightly different approach, we’ve selected some of our favorite songs from this past year and made them into one big ass mix, clocking in just under 2 hours. These are just a few of our favorite songs, because let’s be honest, if we had to compile all of our fav songs this shit would be like 6 hours long. So obviously with that said there were some stuff left off, which was really hard to be honest, and this mix nearly became the best of Fred Falke, Lifelike, Classixx, The Twelves and Grandtheft. SERIOUSLY!

The end of the year is near, so you know everyone and they mamas be putting together a top 10, 15, 20, 25 albums of 2009. We took it upon ourselves to put together a top 10 albums of 2009, but we’ve also asked some of our friends to break us off with they’re lists as well. So who do we have this year? Ohhhh a not so small band called METRIC! The band collectively worked together and put together a fantastic list as did some of other guests such as one of Canada’s best DJ Pump, Keys N Krates member Flowinsky, our homie Jeff from Booooooom, Tristan from Winniecooper.net and a whole host of other cats you’ll have to scroll down to see. A huge thanks for all our friends that came through and hit us off with their lists, I know for a fact all these folks are busy as hell, so much appreciated.

Now onto the lists. We could’ve had honorable mentions, mine would’ve been Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban linx 2, La Roux and a couple of others, but we wanted to get to the core, what the hell did our writers and friends listen to throughout the year that kept them hitting repeat. And with that we present you the top 10 albums of 2009. Let the controversy begin.

2009 brought a ton of opportunities for myself as the sole photographer for Killahbeez. I had the pleasure of shooting Sasquatch! Music Festival, Rock The Bells, Virgin Music Festival, No Doubt, Pearl Jam, Sebastien Tellier, Peaches, The xx, Metric and the list goes on and on. So I decided to compile some of my favorite shots from this past year and share them with you the readers who may or may not have seen some of these photos. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I had a blast taking them. More to come in 2010…I hope.

Below some of the photos are the stories behind them and how I ended up with the shot.

At the beginning of this concert I had to choose. Position myself in front of Dave Navarro or Perry Farrell cus it was going to be unlikely that I was going to have a chance to move back and forth with the amount of photographers shooting this show. I picked Navarro, why? Cus I figured Farrell would come to him and I was right and when he didn’t I ended up with epic side shots like the one below. I love the color explosions in the one above and the light flare just below Navarro’s guitar is sick. The smoke and lighting make it an epic shot. The one above was shot on a fisheye.

This shot here was at a Fool’s Gold gig which featured Treasure Fingers as well as Jokers of The Scene. The guys from JOTS, I guess bumped into this girl named Vanessa and she had some pretty fly ass nails and so this shot came about.

Simian Mobile Disco. The lighting at their shows are always crazy. Dark as hell, but if you capture shit in the right lighting or situation like I luckily was able too, you end up with some pretty cool shots. The one above looks like a space ship is beaming its lights down on him, while the one below captures the essence of their show. Them twisting knobs and playing shit live in front of you.

Another crazy dark show. The band, The Golden Filter, is known to have this air of mysteriousness around them, which explains their dark lighting for live shows and the lead singer covering parts of her face with her hair. I like these two shots because of the lighting as well.

For this shot I armed myself with my 10.5mm fisheye lens and positioned in front of Kim when I noticed Julian coming towards me. I stuck my arm up in the air and caught this shot as Kim stood up in the background.

I love Sebastien Tellier. In particular his last album, Sexuality, was the fuckin’ bees knees. I loved the way he looked / was put together. Really clean look and then you have this face full of facial hair and disheveled hair going every which way.

Kele of Bloc Party is always good to shoot. I’ve photographed Bloc Party twice and he always provides great emotion on stage. This shot is a prime example of him just blasting through the mic and strumming his guitar.

This was at Sasquatch! Music Festival. By now you’ve probably seen the video that the guy above is featured in. It’s had over 2 million views, I provided a video below in case you haven’t seen it. I saw this kid on the first day and he was having the time of his life. I even have pictures of him eating grass, like the lawn he’s dancing on. Anyways this picture kinda captures the fun spirit of the festival. Shit was a great experience.

This show was a great pleasure to shoot. There were no restrictions and Maja Ivarsson played it up for photographers as did her band mates below. Energetic concert from beginning to end.

This shot above was also at The Sounds. I dipped out into the crowd as I usually do. I saw a great path between some concert goers and the Maja on stage and snapped. I ended up with this photo above. I love the light kissing down on one of the audience’s head and the fingers and one fist pump.

The three are my personal favorites because of the contrast and lighting in them. I’m not very good at taking black and white photos, but these ones are definitely favorites of mine.

Stuck in between two monitor speakers up at the stage, I thought, wouldn’t it be fuckin’ great if Ben Harper sets up right in between these two monitors. BAM. It’s like he heard me. Swapped out my regular lens for my fisheye and this was the result.

One word. Legends. Three groups I listened to when I was first introduced to hiphop: NWA, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Shot with a fisheye on this one.

Erykah Badu at Sasquatch! She came out and had such an air of presence about her that you couldn’t explain nor fuck with. Oh and before I forget she came out rocking tight leather black pants. Soooo good.

I photographed a Girl Talk show the previous year, but the photos didn’t turn out very well. I was still adjusting and learning to shoot on digital. So when he came back again I thought it would be great to give it another go. A friend of mine described the shot above as a modern day image of The Last Supper. Ya that Last Supper. While the one below is pretty dope too. I saw this girl prior to the show running around trying to find a way to get a bracelet so that she could dance on stage. Well, guess she got one, and I got her headbanging pretty hard.

I just like the photo above. It just catches my eye every time and I’m not quite sure why. While the photo below I thought was pretty hilarious. One of the concert goers dancing behind Gogol Bordello had shaved his body hair to resemble that of  Eugene Hutz’s facial hair. See above then look at his body hair below. HAHAHAHAHA

One of my favorite shots all weekend at Virgin Music Festival. Jimmy Shaw of Metric, on stage with Broken Social Scene playing the trumpet. The composition and colors stand out to me.

Canadian musician K-OS, the whole photo set I took of him, I would describe with one word. Colorful. His clothes, mixed with the lighting and his movements.

Lykke Li, I had waited for this concert for a loooooong time. The previous time she came to town I had chosen to attend Yelle instead, it was on the same night. This time she came back and I got my shit in order nice and early. A picture of her singing out to the crowd. Shot looks so peaceful, doesn’t it.

The band: Monotonix. This was at Sasquatch! Music Festival and was the most insane show I’ve ever photographed. These dudes don’t set up on a conventional stage, they put their shit in the field with the audience and rock hard. The shot above is a shot of the lead singers ass, this was probably theeeeee most awkward shot ever, not the picture itself, but I was all contorted and shit. I was also shooting this whole show with a 10.5 mm fisheye lens so although it may not seem like I was up close, trust me I was VERY close.

The one below is also ill. He was standing on a speaker box, I was on the photo railing. I love how the cord appears to whip me across the face. Rest assure it didn’t, but the following shot (which isn’t posted here) has him bending down and melting my face off by shredding hard on his guitar.

Whenever I photograph concerts and the singer or band leader is a woman, I always without fail photograph their shoes. Why? The above shot pretty explains it. These Jeremy Scott / Reebok joints are soooo dope. These are what Santigold wore as she rocked the crowd, in what was probably one of my favorite performances all weekend from that festival.

Can’t believe this month is already over, it felt like we just posted Volume 2 of Boner Jams. Well, we’ve put together another killer mix. I know we always say that the last mix is the best, well, I’m gonna say it again, I really dig this one, the sound direction on this one is a bit harder and has more blips throughout. This one I spent some time editing a lot of these tracks and such. The amount of downloads on the first two mixes have been pretty overwhelming and to say the least, kinda surprising, but we love that you all are loving it.

For those new to the series. We compile some of the more popular downloads from the Afternoon Jams segment here on Killahbeez and present that in the form of a mix.

I’m not really sure where to start because Metric has left me pretty blown away. They played their last show of their Canadian tour at the exquisite Orpheum theatre in Vancouver last night, to a crowd that was eager to soak up some pretty awesome Canadian talent.

Opening for Metric was Zeus. They were alright. To be honest, it seemed like they were just wanting to get through their set. Mind you, I don’t blame them. It must be tough being an opener when you see an ocean of empty seats infront of you and you know those seats are empty because everyone’s outside having a drink, waiting for the headliners to hit the stage. Nonetheless, they did have some decent songs, their best being ”That’s All” (too bad it’s a cover song – original by Genesis). As soon as Zeus strummed their last note and said thanks and goodbye, a mob of youngins flew to the stage to get good spots for Metric only to have security kibosh their front row dreams seconds later by sending them all back to their seats. Ha!

Metric took to the stage and instantaneously blew everyone away. Not only was Emily Haines wearing a short, backless, gold sequined number, her voice was…angelic. Yeah, I just called it that. I had never heard Metric live and I was pleasantly surprised. They started with “Twilight Galaxy” and played against a background of flying stars. Like I said, angelic.

They had a simple stage but really cool backgrounds. The screen was split into four sections, one camera on each bandmate, and used what looked like a thermal filter/camera. They also had light bulbs dangling from the light rafters to match their Fantasies album cover.

At one point in the set Haines yelled, “You gotta fight, for your right, to paaaaaarty”…obviously the crowd ate that up. She also said something along the lines of how it’s time for the A.D.D myspace generation to produce another band like Led Zeppelin and that “it’s not about romanticizing the past but acknowledging what sucks from the present.” The band then broke into ” Gimme Sympathy” which got the already wired crowd jumping and moshing (well as much as you can mosh in the Orpheum).

Best tracks of the night were “Help I’m Alive”, “Gold Gun Girls”, “Stadium Love”, and her acoustic version of “Combat Baby” which she devoted to another music artist and friend of the band, Torquil Campbell, and which could have easily brought anyone to tears: it was beautiful.

The only problem of the night was Haines’ hair. Honestly, I get it’s wispy and there’s only so much you can do with it, but please, tie it up and show us your gorgeous face. And although it was cool that she was headbanging, her hair wasn’t so cool after the headbanging. I also didn’t realize that Haines was so spastic. Her spastic movements don’t match her smooth, seductive voice.

Despite her stage antics, Haines and the rest of Metric were incredible. Not only would I argue that Fantasies is one of 2009’s best albums, I think Metric is one of the best bands I’ve seen live.

Well…the show started with a bang. Whether the bang was from opener Foxy Shazam’s sudden first song or  the doors being blown off the travelling (freak show) circus tent, I’m not sure. What I do know is that you should  lock your doors and hide under your bed. Seriously.

It’s not that I didn’t like opening band Foxy Shazam, they’re just insane. They’re good performers but their music is just…meh. The entire time they were on stage I felt like I was watching a Baz Luhrmann movie about a travelling circus. Lead singer Eric Sean Nally, sporting rubber gloves, started the night off by saying, “if the lord picked this building up and turned it sideways, I’d hold onto that pole right over there…” and then…BANG. Madness ensued.

The stage was alive with the blur of shaggy hair. Although they were slightly frightening, they were definetly an energetic bunch. Keyboardist Schuyler Vaughn White was doing some sort of freaky-eyed gorilla jig while trumpet master Alex Nauth was proudly showing off the rip down the ass of his jeans (thankfuly he was wearing boxers – it would have been so, so unfortunate had he not been).

I think the best part of Foxy Shazam’s set were the one-liners Eric sprouted before or after each song. Some of the best were:

“Keep the flowers, the only way to my heart is with an axe,”

“I need love and Christmas presents,” and his sign off at the end of the set,

“Sometimes I wish I had a mirror on stage so that I could look at myself when I sing.”

After the crowd had some time to get over the opening act escapade, The Sounds hit the stage, sans leading lady, playing a short one minute, rock ballad. Out of nowhere a petite little firebolt clad in those faux leather looking tights, hot hot heels, a retro bomber jacket, Mr.T chains, and Charlie’s Angels wind-blown hair,  took the stage for what ended up being a rockin’ concert.

Lead singer Maja Ivarsson is incredible. Think Emily Haines from Metric meets Martina Sorbara from Dragonette, wearing a white t-shirt, drenched with Absolut Vodka. The woman has spunk, and let me tell you, she cusses more than a sailor. She also made sure to chain smoke on stage, climb all over whatever was on stage while in platform heels,  and crowd surf.  I’m pretty sure she also grinded up on one bouncer (happiest moment of his life) and made out with another (dont hold me to that, there were a lot of people in front of me). During “Night after Night” she asked everyone to sing along while waving their cellphones and lighters: I’ve never seen people whip out their phones so quickly. She had the crowed wrapped around her pinky.

The rest of the band was also pretty rad. The guitar riffs during “4 Songs and a Fight” were awesome and the bass during “Tony the Beat” was ridiculous.

Best songs of the night for me were “No One Sleeps”, “4 Songs and a Fight”, “Beatbox”, “Painted by Numbers”, “Tony the Beat”, and  ”Hope You’re Happy Now”.

Gallery: The Sounds in Vancouver

On Saturday night, I had just finished editing photos from the Deadmau5 / Burns event and feeling a bit bored. Not really in the mood to actually see anybody I thought to myself that it would be cool if we could offer a mix just for our readers, essentially a collection of songs that I’m currently digging this month. Thus “Boner Jams” was born. These are essentially jams that give me a musical boner when I hear them, production wise all solid tunes. With that said the transitions are somewhat rough on a few of these songs, but hey 1. it’s been a while for me and 2. I did this mix all in under 2 hours and, *ahem, designed the above cover. But in any case I would love to hear your feedback cus we plan on doing this on the regular.

See every month we’re gonna compile the most downloaded songs from that month off of the Afternoon Jams segment and create a mini-mix that you all can download. Anyways we did this for fun and I definitely had fun just messing around making this. So enjoy.

This past weekend saw the Virgin Music Festival land in Vancouver at Deer Lake Park. Acts included Our Lady Peace, Metric, Sonic Youth, Broken Social Scene, Ben Harper, Jarvis Cocker and many many more.

This was a return of sorts as the Virgin Music Festival didn’t actually come to Vancouver last year. The first day had a great line-up, but was cut short due to a nasty thunderstorm. Organizers feared the worst and decided to cancel the rest of the first day after Our Lady Peace performed. The Roots were suppose to go on next but obviously that didn’t happen. Organizers did release an official statement saying that they do indeed plan to reschedule with The Roots and bring them back to Vancouver. Saturday ticket holders will be able to attend this future concert free of charge, no word yet on when they will be making their way back.

The second day was…well it was fuckin’ hot and I thought I was melting at several points throughout the day. But the line-up made was well worth the wait. Catching acts such as De La Soul, Jarvis Cocker, Sonic Youth, Metric and Ben Harper, what more could one ask for. All these main stage acts were epic and we’ll be dropping the gallery for you all very soon. Maybe all of them today. The crowd turnout on the second day was also a LOT better. Overall a decent return to Vancouver and hopefully it’ll continue building and becoming a mainstay in the Vancouver festival scene.

Recently I embarked on a road trip where I drove about 10 hours (due to holiday traffic) to my destination and 8 hours back home (from 11pm – 7am) and while I was away I was on the road for about 3 hours per day for 3 days. So needless to say I got mad familiar with my MP3 player. It was then that I realized how essential your tunes are to keep you…well me, in this case, awake during these drives. With the Summer basically here and people taking road trips and such I’ve set out and brought you my top 10…ahem…top 15 essential tunes I had to have on the road and these are in no particular order (I tried but gave up essentially).

To start this I laid down some rules. No originals, the majority of the tracks below are remixes as you’ll see, but these were the jams I actually rocked as oppose to the originals. Tried to restrict myself to remixes that dropped between January of 2009 and June of 2009, so we have the freshest of the fresh here.

And yeaaaaaah I realized I cheated, but you know what, who cares, you win cus you get more songs to download. Feel I’m missing something, hit us with your input by leaving a comment below.

One remix that I would’ve loved to have added to this list is Grandtheft’s remix of The Juan MacLeans’ “One Day”, but the track hasn’t officially dropped yet and I ain’t gonna be the one that leaks it. After all that camp has been great with Killahbeez. I will say though that I had this remix on repeat numerous times on my road trip, so be on the look out for it when it drops.

It’s been four years since we heard a full-length album from Metric, but as you’ll read below, they weren’t exactly just sitting around doing nothing. Solo albums, books, studios being built, touring, etc, and an escape to Buenos Aires were all that occupied their time and added up to the four years, but alas the wait is over and the new album, Fantasies, was released on April. The album, Fantasies, has received great reviews, some did state there were a few flaws (including our own Mona Alice), but what project doesn’t have these, personally this album sits in my top 10 list of 2009 so far. In this Q&A with Metric front woman, Emily Haines, she touches on why the four year wait, the current tour, and possibly an upcoming metal album and collaboration with Tiesto…Yeah, that wasn’t a typo, you read that correctly.

Killahbeez: Hi Emily, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. Congrats on the latest album, Fantasies. You guys are currently on tour supporting the album, how has that been going?

Emily Haines: So far so good! We just finished a sold out Euro/UK run, got a few days off and then starting up on the US tour on June 4th in Seattle. Live music really is such an incredible medium, you know? You’ve got this massive crowd of people who would be elbowing each other and scowling if they were on public transit together, but because the room is full of music all that crap melts away. Transcendent. We have found our dream sound man, this kid named Trevor Coppen, he has such an imaginative way of mixing, I love looking out at the audience and knowing he is taking them on a trip.

KB: Any crazy stories or favourite cities that you would to visit again once touring is complete?

EH: Ahh, well crazy stories that’s a loaded question. You have to make a real effort on tour to remind yourself that in addition to running a rock and roll marathon you are also traveling…to the best cities in the world! The schedule is grueling and often with press and everything else you only have an hour to yourself…I try to get myself across town to look at a fucking statue or walk through a park, anything that gets me out of the grind. I would love to go back to Sao Paulo, when we were there I had these four huge security guards with me everywhere I went, it was a drag. I tried to sneak away but they caught me, I felt like Britney (Spears). Man that has got to suck, never getting to just walk down the street without having some jock shout your name? There’s not a musician alive that doesn’t have fantasies about blinding fame, but I gotta tell you, I really  like riding my bike around and wandering in my neighborhood in Toronto or NYC. I hope I never have to trade that in.

KB: There was about a 4 year gap between this release and Live It Out, was there a particular reason why the band chose to take that length of time between albums or were there roadblocks that prevented the band to move forward?

EH: That four years felt like no time at all, so much happened. We toured Live it Out for two and a half years, I released and toured my solo album Knives Don’t Have Your Back and the follow up EP What is Free to a Good Home?, published a book of my late father Paul Haines’ poems called Secret Carnival Workers. Josh and Joules released and toured their Bang Lime record, we released a live DVD called “Live at Metropolis”, we put out a previously unreleased domestic electronica album from 1999 called Grow Up and Blow Away, bought a building in Toronto where Jimmy built his recording studio called Giant, and hung out with lawyers for months on end constructing our own worldwide record label to release Fantasies. Somewhere in there I went to Argentina for a few months, wrote music and filmed a documentary, Barack Obama won the election, and the next thing I knew I was back on a tour bus.

KB: In one of your video pieces, “Help I’m Alive” Interview, on ILoveMetric.com, you mentioned that at one point you had had given up on writing because you felt “gridlocked” and in a state of “paralysis”. But Buenos Aires had lifted you out of that. What about that city re-inspired you?

EH: Yeah, it’s a common feeling among musicians. You’re still so disoriented from all the touring and the first thing you’re meant to do when you get home is get “inspired” and start writing your next record. For me, inspiration isn’t something I sit around at Starbucks with my laptop waiting for, you know? For as long as I can remember, I have written songs because I wanted to, because I was experiencing something that couldn’t be described except through a sound. God help me if that ever changes! It does mean I have to trick myself into thinking I don’t care if I ever write another song again and embark on questionable endeavors, like fucking off to Buenos Aires and not knowing a single person or having any idea what I was doing or what was going to happen. Until the day we die, our lives are unwritten, which is sometimes a terrifying thought. For me, not as terrifying as feeling like everything is static though.

KB: On that same video you’re seen playing “Help I’m Alive” on the piano and it kinda gave me goosebumps, any chance we’ll hear an acoustic or just a piano version of that song?

EH: Aw, thanks! Yeah there is an acoustic version of the song that Jimmy and I play, it’s a free download at ILoveMetric.com. I think in the documentary video I was just improvising some other melody too, I should go back and listen to it and maybe incorporate that the next time Jimmy and I do one of our secret acoustic tours.

KB: So for the album Fantasies, what was the writing process?

EH: Our first writing session was in a farmhouse studio north of Seattle called Bear Creek, we wrote the beginnings of “Gimme Sympathy” and “Collect Call” there. Then we did a few sessions at Giant where the four of us just played around with ideas and that’s how “Stadium Love” and “Twilight Galaxy” came to be. “Satellite Mind” and “Gold Guns Girls” are tracks that Jimmy wrote and sent to me, I wrote lyrics and melodies to those on a road trip across Argentina. “Blindness”, Jimmy and I wrote on an old organ I found in the garbage and dragged back to the studio. “Help I’m Allive”, “Sick Muse” and “Front Row” I wrote in London and Buenos Aires. We took our time writing and building the studio, but once we had all the song, the process was fast. We mixed at Electric Lady in NYC with John O’Mahony and ended up adding and changing lots of key elements at the eleventh hour. We had a film crew following us around making the “Rawside” documentary, it was full on (and) intensely fun.

KB: What were some of musical or non-musical inspirations that lead to the finished collection?

EH: Films mostly, David Lynchs Inland Empire, Michael Hanekes The Seventh Continent, Brian De Palmas Scarface, Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kaneto Shindos Onibaba, dated episodes of Entourage and lots of hockey!

KB: What are some bands or albums that you’re listening to now?

EH: The Happiness Project on Arts & Crafts! It defies description. Tropic Appetites by Carla Bley. Lee Hazelwood. Flash Lightin.

KB: Seems early, but have you already started collecting or noting ideas for the next album?

EH: Well we’ve been suggesting that our next album will be a metal record but all reports are unconfirmed.

KB: In terms of a solo album, will there be another release sometime down the road?

EH: Yeah, happily there are lots of songs and ideas floating around right now. It’s just a matter of making everything fit and not feeling fractured. Timing is everything.

KB: We recently interviewed friend and fellow Canadian K-OS. He mentioned you two and Murray Lightburn all worked together on a track and he had nothing but positives to say about that experience. How did that opportunity come about? Was it something that was discussed previously or a spur of the moment?

EH: It was totally spur of the moment, I was in NYC and he sent me the track in the middle of the night with a dawn deadline. It’s just a little cameo appearance but I am a big fan of both K-OS and Murray so of course I said yes.

KB: Do you have any other collaborations coming up that fans can look forward to?

EH: I got it into my head that I would make an excellent dance floor diva so I did a track with Tiesto. Metric has a song called “Black Sheep: (aka Freddy Mercury) on the soundtrack for the new Edgar Wright film, it comes out in 2010 and the soundtrack was put together by Nigel Godrich. They’re shooting in Toronto and he did some work at our studio for the movie. Good times!

KB: Will you be working with or will you be on the road with Broken Social Scene?

EH: Who knows! They asked me to play some shows this Summer and there are whispers of a new album in the works…Jimmy and I are both going to try and make it.

KB: Thanks again for taking the time to answer these questions. For first time listeners and / or for the current fans what sort of experience do you want them to take away from Fantasies?

EH: A sense of possibility.
