Well 2009 is nearing it’s end and everybody has dropped their lists of favorite albums, remixes, songs, etc. (Check our top 10 albums of 2009 here) Generally we compile the Boner Jams based on downloads for the month and make a mini-mix, for this one we’ve taken a slightly different approach, we’ve selected some of our favorite songs from this past year and made them into one big ass mix, clocking in just under 2 hours. These are just a few of our favorite songs, because let’s be honest, if we had to compile all of our fav songs this shit would be like 6 hours long. So obviously with that said there were some stuff left off, which was really hard to be honest, and this mix nearly became the best of Fred Falke, Lifelike, Classixx, The Twelves and Grandtheft. SERIOUSLY!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past year, when you hear the name “Classixx”, sounds of some really great fuckin’ tunes enter your mind. When I personally hear a Classixx remix, it automatically transports me back to when the weather was nice and cruising around town on my bike, or dancing my sweaty ass off at a club. Whatever the case may be, the duo, Tyler Blake and Michael David, really turned it up this year and had everyone talking about their remixes. These remixes included the likes of Phoenix, Holy Ghost!, Major Lazer, YACHT and Ladyhawke to name a few, one after another, they just didn’t disappoint.

Killahbeez: Start off with the name, you two were previously called “Young Americans”, why the name change and how’d you two arrive on “Classixx”?

Michael: We were sued by a dancing choir called Young Americans based in Orange County. Tyler came up with the name Classixx, we wanted a name that wasn’t associated with anything in particular.

Killahbeez: How did you two initially meet and then decide to team up together and make music?

Michael: Tyler and I met in 6th grade. After high school we lived on separate sides of the country and kept in touch over the internet. We both ended up in Los Angeles and wanted to start a music project. We’d always been into electronic music, but dance music was pretty foreign to us. Before long we caught onto things like DFA, their records sounded so good to us.

Killahbeez: What are your backgrounds in music, were either of you trained or took lessons on any instruments and such?

Michael: Ya, we both took music lessons as kids. I’ve been playing guitar from childhood, and started programming synths and playing on Reason at 15. The same goes for Tyler, but he started on piano.

Killahbeez: This Summer easily, for me listening wise, was defined as a “Classixx” Summer. First Classixx had the single “I’ll Get You”, followed by remixes for Phoenix, Holy Ghost, Major Lazer, and YACHT. All of these were bangers and easily quintessential jams. Before the summer did you two have an idea that it was going to be as great as it turned out to be?

Michael: That’s nice of you to say. We didn’t know our sound would catch on this summer, but we did work tirelessly at it.

Killahbeez: For a few of the remixes above could you two give a breakdown on what inspired the final product?

Michael: For the Phoenix mix, we wanted to put the song into half-time. It was dragging, but finally I found a jumping synth rhythm that seemed to keep a stone groove. The rest was pretty simple

The Major Lazer one was fun because it has a slide guitar, and we got to use the sound seagulls that we had sampled.

Killahbeez: What about influence on your overall group sound, what bands, past or present, influence you two when you’re in the studio?

Michael: In the studio we’re constantly referencing music. It always depends, this summer we felt a strong Quincy Jones influence.

Killahbeez: You’ve released a few singles and a bunch of remixes now. Are there plans on getting a full album together?

Michael: Our schedule has made a full album difficult, but we are working on a number of original tunes. A full album would be nice to complete.

Killahbeez: What do you guys use when you make your music? Do you use analog or virtual synths? Software?

Michael: Everything. Lately, it has been pretty live and analog. We use Pro Tools specifically, it’s been that way for years.

Killahbeez: So what’s next for Classixx?

Michael: The next few months will be a lot of work in the studio.

Killahbeez: Any advice or words to fans or up-and-coming producers / DJs?

Michael: Just to work as hard as you can. I’d also say to practice a lot before you introduce yourself to the internet.

Back in October we had the chance to catch up with BURNS. His plan for the o-nine, releasing four EPs (3 of 4 so far have been released, Disko, Teknique and Turbo) and oh let’s not forget that massive tour he’s currently on with Deadmau5. All in between this, he’s done remixes for Gossip, Passion Pit, Calvin Harris, Empire of the Sun and…well I could go on and on, check the interview and on Tuesday we’re giving away a pair of tickets to the upcoming Deadmau5 / BURNS show on November 23rd in Washington, DC.

Killahbeez: Your going on tour with Deadmau5 that will see you going all over North America, what can fans (new and old) expect to hear from you when you hit the stage with your set?

BURNS: I’ll be DJing so it will just be a mixture of the music I’m in to and my own stuff…

KB: Your sound has a hard electro almost techno feel to it, but at times you can hear disco melodies intertwined on your tracks, how would you describe your sound? And what inspires it?

BURNS: Everything inspires it, I just do whatever I feel like at the time which I think keeps it quite diverse. It depends on what mood I’m in. What is exciting is that people assume that the songs I’ve released this year are going to be on the album and that this is my “sound”, however the album sounds quite different to what’s out at the moment so its going to be really interesting to see what the reaction is when the album singles start coming out next year…

KB: So ya you have the three EPs so far, Disko 12”, Turbo EP and Teknique EP. Will there be a full-length release for this year?

BURNS: Nope, I’m not rushing things at all, there will be one more EP release in the series 1-4 which will be out late this year or maybe early next year then there will be a few singles prior to the album release which I’m planning for summer next year…

KB: Speaking of Teknique, on that EP you had the legendary Fred Falke remix your song ‘First Move’. How did that opportunity come about?

BURNS: Me and Fred had been talking for a while about maybe working on something together so when the EP was finished I just asked him on the off chance whether he’d be interested in doing a mix on ‘First Move’ and he said yes, Hopefully we will get the opportunity to work together properly in the future.

KB: You’ve done a slew of remixes for artists such as Empire of the Sun, Calvin Harris, Gossip etc. When you head into a production, is there a mind frame you try to take on for each song?

BURNS: Not really, I just listen to the original song and try to decide what my favourite part is then I build my own song around it. I guess most of the time I try to see things from a club perspective but if the artist has no preference on what they want then I like to be free and just see where it takes me.

KB: Is there a remix of yours that stands out most? One that gave you felt you got right away?

BURNS: Erm… I dont know!? I’m really my biggest critic so I always feel afterwards that I could have made it better if I’d have changed this or that? I had a good feeling about the Gossip remix when I finished that and also a remix I did for Jack Splash and Missy Elliot which isn’t out yet…

KB: Sticking to remixes, I read on your twitter account that you’re remixing a Ladyhawke track, how’s that coming along and are you able to say what track it is?

BURNS: It is finished now, Its for the track “Magic” I’m really happy with it, although again people will maybe be surprised by the route I went down with it..

KB: Any other collaborations coming up that are planned?

BURNS: I’m working with a few artists and producing for someone’s album, I’m not allowed to name any names yet but I’m very excited about it…

KB: What are your top five tracks that you incorporate into your set most of the time?

BURNS: I never play the same set more than once and I never plan a set, it always depends on the type of crowd I’m playing to. I guess if I had to name five tracks I enjoy playing out it would be:

On Saturday night, I had just finished editing photos from the Deadmau5 / Burns event and feeling a bit bored. Not really in the mood to actually see anybody I thought to myself that it would be cool if we could offer a mix just for our readers, essentially a collection of songs that I’m currently digging this month. Thus “Boner Jams” was born. These are essentially jams that give me a musical boner when I hear them, production wise all solid tunes. With that said the transitions are somewhat rough on a few of these songs, but hey 1. it’s been a while for me and 2. I did this mix all in under 2 hours and, *ahem, designed the above cover. But in any case I would love to hear your feedback cus we plan on doing this on the regular.

See every month we’re gonna compile the most downloaded songs from that month off of the Afternoon Jams segment and create a mini-mix that you all can download. Anyways we did this for fun and I definitely had fun just messing around making this. So enjoy.

I love Ladyhawke, everything about her screams 80’s revival, the guitar riffs, heavy use of synths, her sense of style and alllll of her videos all borrow from a generation that was. If you’ve yet to experience the mythical goodness from Perth, Australia, known as Empire Of The Sun, then you my friend have been living under a rock. But if you’ve been following this site for awhile you’ll know that last August we were first introduced to the band via the video “Walking On A Dream”, which was epic. Shortly after this song became a staple on most of our writers iPod as quite a few of us were highly anticipating album drop. Unfortunately for us that drop was only for Australia, but fast forward a few months later and the mystical duo, Nick Littlemore and Luke Steele, would have their album released for North America.  To celebrate that release we caught up with Nick Littlemore and talked Empire Of The Sun, previous bands (Pnau, The Sleepy Jackson and Teenager), the concept behind the name, album and an Empire Of The Sun opera???

Killahbeez: I’ve been an avid listener of Pnau and The Sleepy Jackson, as well as Teenager. So give us the story of how you and Luke Steele met and then decided that there was enough of a connection to work together?

Nick Littlemore: I love to collaborate. I pretty much try to work with every person I meet.
Luke and I have always worked together. I guess we like to make sounds and write songs rather than drink together or chase girls. We have that kind of friendship. Making music together is like hanging out. Nowadays it is about songs and expressing our own emotion, something we relate to about our lives, loves and lyrics. Luke has an immense talent, I am in awe of his voice, it’s a joy to write for.

The thing that was always apparent from working with Luke was that his voice is so strong. I wanted to work with him to embrace his genius, to create a coupling around his voice; to frame it, if you like. We first messed with a PNAU sound and things suddenly took flight. We cut “With you forever” with Luke on guest vocals and we stood back and realized that something had happened, we had a spark, something new, something wild.

I went to Italy and wrote songs while my girl nursed a broke leg. I needed a break after the PNAU record but this new sound with Luke persisted in my thoughts and scribbles. The sun was constant for me in Italy and for Luke in Perth. We knew we had to act. I rushed back to Australia and both Luke and I were ready to explode. We knew we had started something that could not be stopped, that we could not resist. The Empire began…

KB: The bands name, Empire Of The Sun, what’s the significance behind it and how did you both come to use that name?

NL: We are mystics, travelling to all the ancient places in the world, where the sun has great power and significance, the Ballard connection is merely a nod to one of the best writers in the universe (Referring to the novel Empire Of The Sun).

KB: For the North American fans that haven’t heard the album yet, what’s the concept / theme behind the album?

NL: Life is a journey. But even listening to a record is one too. Time passing, light shifting. The world changes in a second, let alone in the time it takes to walk on a dream. I think we make soundtracks to life. To the journey of life. Just with Empire things are more magical and impossible.

KB: Wow. That is true, in listening to the album myself I felt like I was listening to a soundtrack of my travels. In the bands bio, I read that the one word you wanted listeners to associate with the album is – “Surrender”. Is there something specific that the band wanted people to surrender to? Love?

NL: Close your eyes and listen to our album, or even just one song. Take a chance and let yourself go. Yes Surrender to our journey. We mean it all; we lived every word, every dream. Empire is a wish, a dream for us, so much pain so much love. For if you surrender, you can be healed and in turn heal the world.

KB: The band’s first single, “Walking On A Dream”, was an instant smash last summer, even though it’s just officially being released in North America. I remember hearing it quite a bit at various parties here. When I sat down and followed the lyrics I realized it was a bit of a love song, was it written for someone in particular? Or just an emotion that was inside that was waiting to get out?

NL: My girlfriend was in the jungles of Brazil, sick and exhausted, she called me from a small village deep in the forest, I felt so much empathy, so paralyzed by the distance between us, that I could not do anything to help so I wrote this tune, to try to capture all the magic in the world and force a melody so positive that I could actually send a signal to her that everything would work out, so its really that, yes a love song and a long distance call, a channelling of energy towards positive ends….

KB: All the women around the world just let out a collective sigh. Your videos, “Walking on a Dream”, “We Are The People” and the soon to be released “Standing on the Shore”, are BEAUTIFULLY shot, the visuals are amazing. They seem to somewhat flow from one to the other; will the other following videos continue on the same sort of theme?

NL: There is an order to all things and when the time is right all will be revealed.

KB: Definitely looking forward to that. What were some of the difficulties you guys faced when taking your concepts and actually filming them?

NL: We are both so visual. So inspired by film and art that it is hard to collaborate. That is why we jumped out of the safety net of studios and conventions and made the videos as adventurous as they look. We explored, we lived those moments. We saw vultures circling around us in the desert ready to attack. I would love to travel forever and take inspirations from all the wonders of this planet. We use the experiences to create so even those at times things can be daunting the adventure is always worth it.

KB: In a recent interview you guys did I read that you wanted to take a page out of Kanye Wests book when it came to making the visual aspect fit in with the music. Can you speak a bit on that? The man is definitely more than a hip-hop artist; he’s an entertainer in the true sense of the word.

NL: Music is colour to me, it always has been, I don’t see notes on a stave I see landscapes, clouds, drops dirt sirens in the sky, we are always trying to get closer, closer to showing the audience what we see, the costumes, the locations are just the start, this is an evolution

KB: So are there any plans to taking Empire Of The Sun live? With the music being quite cinematic, it could almost be a play.

NL: I would love to do a play, a film and opera. I think this music has so much potential, so much atmosphere. I think music is moving into a new sphere where it will not be judged by its references. All music is the sum of all things. That is the kind of records I want to make, like great art, this is music that you can feel and read so many things out of. Close your eyes and dream and you will see the play, be your own story and the Empire will be with you.

KB: Moving away from the Empire of the Sun project, will fans of Pnau, The Sleepy Jackson and Teenager hear another potential project? Any chance on working on that with Ladyhawke again?

NL: Teenager will never break up and yes Pip is never too far away, she is a wonderful light in my life and like Luke makes me honored to make music with.

KB: Who are some of your musical influences?

NL: Laurie Anderson, John Cage, Lindsay Buckingham, Moondog, Skinny Puppy, Meat Beat Manifesto, Mirror Mirror, M.Craft, Brian Eno, Vangelis, Xenakis, Harry Nilsson, Django Reinhardt, Leonard Cohen, Silvia Ocougne, Isao Tomita, Jefferson Aeroplane and Elvis.

KB: That’s quite a list. I want to thank you again for taking the time to do this. For the fans out there that will be picking up the album, what did you want them to take away from the listening experience?

NL: That anything is possible, that creativity is what we preach, that which is in each and every one, we all got something brilliant to communicate, after all that’s what the world revolves on.

Just heard the new Fred Falke remix of Ladyhawke’s “Back Of The Van” and wow, I was just shook. This remix is ridiculously awesome, clearly I’m at a lost for words. Shit is just magical, download it. The next track is another epic piece, but what you can expect Explorer is part of the Valerie Collective, big news on that front is that all 6 of them are working on a compilation together. Awww snap, I think I just popped wood. Your welcome.The third jam I heard a bit ago and I’m starting to feel these cats, straight outta West Philadelphia, Chiddy Bang. They used MGMT’s instrumental for “Kids” and did their own version. pretty banging.

For this week’s Mixtape Monday, I came across Dj Loveboat mix, ‘Cotonete’.  Not much is known about Dj Loveboat and it may safe to assume his alias has nothing to do with Aaron Spelling’s show.  I did, however, find out that this mixtape was originally dropped on March 23rd in support of Breaklda’s 4th year as a record label.   The playlist consists of bangers, electro pop hits along with a few reworks by Mr. Loveboat himself.  Have a listen and dl the mix here.  Truthfully, I was intrigued as to how Appaloosa’s single, ‘The Day We fell In Love‘  fits into the equation.

Back in December we proudly shared fellow Killahbeez family member AJK’s song “Tangent”, one of a handful of tracks that were available on his EP, which was created and inspired by the streets and Summer he spent in New York City. Well he’s back with some more dopeness for your ears. Awhile back Ladyhawke on her MySpace page announced a contest for would be producers to remix her track “Back Of The Van” and provided all the stems. That competition has long since closed, but AJK went ahead and did this out of love and what resulted was…well the remix speaks for itself. This week’s Mixtape Monday is from a party out in West London that takes place on the 2nd Friday of every month at The Westbury, the name of this party: Dance on Glass. The latest party that took place had Breakbot playing what he plays best, disco grooves and funk. To help promote the party the Dance on Glass crew released a Breakbot Disco Mini Mix. This mix may only be 26 mins long, but its got some great jams on here and the vibe is steady throughout, constantly making you say to yourself ‘OHHH SHIT!” and wishing that you were at the party that recently took place. Breakbot Disco Mini Mix

Available for download is the track “Make You Mine” by Australian musician Miami Horror. Miami Horror is best known for remixes that blew up over the course of 2008, remixing the likes of Pnau, Bloc Party, Stardust, The Presets and Midnight Juggernauts to name a few. Miami Horror is the brainchild of a 22 year old who has earned his stance as one of the most talked about artists and definite one to watch for in 2009. After putting himself on the map by DJing various high profile events in his native Melbourne, Australia and remixing and writing tons of killer tunes, he’s now setting his sights Stateside and will be spinning in the US and at SXSW this spring before returning back into the studio to finish the recording of the Miami Horror debut album, set for release later this year.

In addition to having “Make You Mine” available for download we also have Miami Horror’s other well known track “Don’t be on with Her” as well as the Pnau featuring Ladyhawke remix with Fred Falke and The Presets remix that was also done.

A few months back Modular Recording artist and Killahbeez favorite, Ladyhawke, held an open contest on her MySpace page inviting producers and DJs to take a stab at remixing her song “Back of the Van”. The competition has since ended and although I don’t think a winner has been announced, here’s an entry from Lajer & Kartik also known as ddpesh. The Brooklyn based duo has remixed a slew of artists such as Cut Copy, MGMT and Chromeo to name a few. Their latest remix of Ladyhawke’s “Back of the Van” is easily one of the dopest that I’ve heard so far and trust me, there’s’ more garbage then dopeness out there. Avid readers of Killahbeez knows now much Dave, AJK and myself absolutely loooooooooove Modular Recordings.  Cut Copy, Presets, Phillippa Brown aka Ladyhawke, MSTKRFT, Van She and the list could go on.  Although this week’s Throwback Thursday may not be a band from pre-21st century, we’d like to give them props for being the band that started it all.  A big up to Steve Pavlovic for taking a risk and signing on The Avalanches.  The below video is their hit single, Since I Left You.  Enjoy.

So I’ve been reading a lot of these “Top 10 albums of 2008″ list in the last little while and decided, hell our staff here at Killahbeez has some pretty dope taste in music, we should also do one. So we’ve compiled a list from our writers annnnnd on top of that we’ve reached out to people that we’ve worked with in the past year such as Jeff Hamada from Booooooom, Sasha Lee from Halcyon Magazine, Michael Halford from Orland Kurtenblog and Sean La-La from Spectrum Events. For this Mixtape Monday we found this Kitsune Noir mix by James Kane aka Teen Creep. According to Kitsune’s site James Kane is an up-and-coming DJ from Australia that’s been making some waves with his remixes.

As you can see from the tracklistings, his mix is pretty eclectic. Includes everything from Ladyhawke, Hall & Oates, Prince, Elton John and the list goes on. Have a listen to the stream below or download it and take it to go on your drive in to work. In any case it’s pretty good.
