So by now you’ve seen the cover for Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 album cover, but now the tracklisting has been released. Usual suspects or folks you would expect are on there such as Kanye West, Rihanna, Drake, etc. But one that surprises me is Luke Steele from Empire of the Sun, that’s gonna be sick and I’m looking forward to hearing that track. A-Trak grew up with being labeled a child DJ prodigy by many, but despite that heavy label, he’s been able to deliver above and beyond anybody’s expectations. Constantly coming up dopness to give us eargasms on projects like Sunglasses is a Must, to Dirty South Dance and now Infinity + 1 and his Fabriclive mix. Expanding beyond his own music he co-founded record label Fool’s Gold Records with friend and fellow DJ, Nick Catchdubs and discovering KiD CuDi. He’s currently on his 10,000lb Hamburger Tour which features Fool’s Gold DJ, Treasure Fingers and Theophilus London, which is stopping throughout various cities in North America.

Killahbeez: A-Trak, thanks for taking the time to do this interview.

A-Trak: All good…

KB: Lets’ talk Infinity +1, how does this project differ from Dirty South Dance, which was a personal favorite on repeat for a straight year.

A-Trak: Thanks man. This mix CD is completely different. The whole concept of Dirty South Dance was based on bootlegs that I was making with rap acapellas and electro tracks. That was a new sound in 2007 but I can’t do that anymore. Infinity +1 is much more based on the montage of songs itself, rather than the individual songs. And musically it’s in another vein.

KB: It seems that this new release features more of an electro/disco/house vibe to it. Is that reflective of your personal taste has evolved over the years?

A-Trak: Yeah that’s correct , it’s got a sort of spacey vibe to it. Of course my taste and my selections evolve with time. Up until 5 years ago I was mostly playing hip hop. Around the time that I put out my DVD (Sunglasses Is A Must) and did that tour with The Rub I started playing more party sets. When I made the Dirty South Dance CD I was getting interested in electronic music. I’ve dug deeper into that since then and now I think I pick and choose from all those areas and pick my selections depending on the context.

KB: In an interview that our writer, AJK, did with your brother, Dave 1, they touched on how Chromeos’ sound and your sound are starting to fall in line. Growing up how much of an influence did your older brother play in the music that you listened to? Do you two still bounce material off of one another?

A-Trak: Dave played a huge influence on me when we were growing up, in terms of listening to music. Basically I would listen to whatever he and his friends were listening to. Now we share a lot of music. Yes he’s definitely the first person to hear my demos and give me feedback, and vice versa for Chromeo.

KB: Switching topics to fashion. It’s clear that you have an appreciation for fashion, you’ve modeled for Sixpack’s lookbook, what was that experience like and are you doing more stuff down the road?

A-Trak: Doing the Sixpack lookbook was fun, I’ve collaborated with that brand many times over the years so I’m always happy to do more stuff with them. I’ve been asked by more brands but I turn down a lot of things. I actually wear Sixpack tees so it made sense for me to do that shoot.

KB: Staying on the topic of fashion, you hit up Paris for fashion week. Which shows were you able to take in and were there any pieces that stood out in your mind?

A-Trak: Yeah I went to Paris fashion week with Kanye. It was women’s fashion week though I can’t really recall specific pieces, it was more about taking in all the creativity. I saw Givenchy, YSL, Hussein Chalayan, Viktor & Rolf and Sonia Rykiel.

KB: Going back to music, I’ve heard that you and Solange Knowles are working on some music and a record between yourself and Armand Van Helden. Are there any other collaborations or remixes that you have planned next?

A-Trak: Yes I worked on a track with Solange and I’m sure we’ll do more. She’s a great writer and has a very open mind. Sure there are more collaborations planned but I won’t tell you everything! I will tell you that I just completed an EP with Armand Van Helden which is coming out on Fool’s Gold.

KB: What else is on the agenda for A-Trak?

A-Trak: Wrapping up a few remixes and I’m going to start on an A-Trak record soon.

KB: Any departing words for the readers out there? Thanks again for taking the time.

Official video for KiD CuDi’s “Make Her Say” dropped yesterday on MTV. The song features bars from G.O.O.D. Music family members Kanye West and Common. If you can’t tell the sample it’s off of Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face”. “Make Her Say” will be on CuDi’s debut, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, which drops in September.

Two remixes and a freestyle. The freestyle comes courtesy of Kid Cudi, there was a ton of positive feedback on the mixtape we dropped earlier this week, so when I came across this freestyle it was a no brainer. Clipses joint “Kinda Like A Big Deal” already gets remixed, still features Kanye West, but this time add Bun B to the mix and you got fire for days. A billion remixes out there for Phoenix, but what makes this one stand out, is that its punchy basslines and uptempo vibe.

Todays’ jam is just a couple of songs, its a straight up whole mixtape starring Kid Cudi. Dat Kid From Cleveland contains a bunch of new joints, previews, etc as well as the song “I Poke Her Face”. I have to say, Kid Cudi actually somewhat makes me believe in hip-hop again, real talk.

I really did not know what to expect from Lily Allen considering I’ve never watched any live performances of hers or read any reviews on her shows.  But by the end of the night, I was convinced that she knew how to put on a damn good show.

Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head opened up for Miss Allen at the 9:30 club in front of a sold out audience, and came on around 9:15pm. Unfortunately I missed them, so for those who were looking forward to reading about them, my sincere apologies. Allen was expected to come on stage at 10:15pm and fortunately she was only 5-10 minutes late. A huge white curtain covered the stage and as soon as the opening for “Everyone’s At It” started to play, the crowd went crazy. The curtain dropped only to reveal the band and Lily herself.

My first thought was that she looked cute from head to toe. Even though she was wearing extremely high heels, you could still tell that she’s a tiny girl.  I then immediately noticed how good her voice sounded. It was almost as if I were listening to her on my ipod. The second song she sang was “I Could Say,” which is one of my favorites from her current album “It’s Not Me, It’s You.” The song talks about growing up after getting out of a relationship and it’s definitely relatable.

I expected her to throw out some of her old stuff which she definitely did. The first was “Oh My God” which was a collaboration that she had done with Mark Ronson and is a cover of a Kaiser Chiefs song. Another oldie was “LDN” which is from her debut album “Alright, Still.” The crowd practically went nuts for every song, whether it was new or old. She slowed things down a bit with “He Wasn’t There,” telling the audience that the song is about her absent father. Afterward she sang  “Littlest Things” which was a favorite of mine off her old album due to its haunting tune and message.

With a cigarette in one hand and a mic in the other, she still was able to show off her vocal abilities and I found that amusing only because I had never really seen an artist smoke one cigarette right after the other during a show. The audience got pumped up once again when she sang “Not Fair” and “Fuck You” both from her latest album. These are songs that make you want to dance regardless of its meaning. But if you really want to know, one is about a guy who seems perfect except he’s bad in bed, and the other is regarding George W. Bush. She soon said her goodbyes and thanked the audience and her band, but of course we knew better than that.

The crowd screamed for her at the top of their lungs and she quickly returned back to the stage wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and jordans. Looking more comfortable and even smaller, she danced to the background beat of Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N’ Nite” for a bit and then continued by singing a cover of Britney Spears’ “Womanizer.” If you don’t have it, go get it! And just when you thought the show was coming to an end, she busted out with “Smile” and “The Fear” as her last songs for the evening. The crowd was loving every minute of it, literally.

As I walked away I thought about how awesome the show was and how much I really do love her music. She was energetic, giggly, and chill all rolled into one. It’s unfortunate that she doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to the paparazzi, but don’t believe everything you read and see about her. This girl knows what’s up and I have a feeling she’ll be sticking around for years to come.  A huge thanks goes to 9:30 Club for allowing Killahbeez to attend an eventful evening.  Keep an eye out on their calendar as there are plenty of great shows coming our way.

Here’s a new track, “I Poker Her Face”, via Kanye’s blog that he dropped yesterday. It’s Kid Cudi featuring Kanye West, Common with scratches from A-Trak. Definitely down with this jam right, the lyrics are pretty funny when you listen to them, all three gentlemen kill it on the track and it was a nice touch scratching in GaGa’s song “Poker Face” in at the end. A nice tie in.

If you were one of the ones that didn’t get to venture down to SXSW, this includes me, which I am now kicking myself for. Then you missed out on one of the hypest shows that went down. Levi’s and Faders tent featured Kanye West, Common, Kid Cudi, Erykah Badu and the rest of the G.O.O.D. Music family members. SPIN magazine reported that Kanye and above mentioned cohorts performed for 2 hours straight…siiiiiick! For this week’s Mixtape Monday, I came across a double headliner mix via Asian Dan.  Rob da Bank introduces two of France’s most influential men in electronic music.  The first hour is covered by the producer with the golden touch, Fred Falke.  Ed Banger’s frontman, Pedro Winter, covers the second half of this 2 hour mix.  For the most part, Fred Falke’s set consists of tracks he’s gotten his hands dirty on.  Per Busy P and Rob da Bank’s dialogue, his set consists of mid to downtempo favorites for those in favor of afterparty music.

Its a hard toss up between which mix I enjoyed best.  Fred Falke is an overly confident dj/producer that loves to play his own work live.  No hate here folks, I get ecstatic every time I see a new mp3 with Mr Falke’s name all over it.  But the minute I keyed in “overly confident”, the name, Dillinja, immediately came to mind with a chuckle to follow.  Then there is Busy P who experimented all across the board.  I wanna say his is the best because he introduced  Bullion, whom I would’ve never knew existed.  Then towards the end he busted out with some Masters at Work steez.  Yo Pedro, Why didn’t you play “Runaway” instead???

The latest video from G.O.O.D. recording artist KiD CuDi for the track called “SuperBoo”. The video is directed by Tishaun Dawson for BattalionArmour.com and features “The Beautiful Warriors”, which consists of Nazanin, Jessie, Marly, Kaila, Kacie & Jeanette. Kid Cudi’s music video for “Day ‘N Nite” premiered on 106 & Park today. This is now official folks and not to be mistaken for the Crooker’s remix music video that leaked out to the internet last December. Apparently, Kid Cudi was infuriated when the video leaked. Since it was not his “official” single, he immediately pulled the plug on it.

As of lately, I’ve been hearing the Crooker’s remix played in dance clubs – a little late from it’s original release.  However, its better late than never.

Here’s the latest video from Kanye West and features Kid Cudi as well, for the single “Welcome To Heartbreak”, which comes off of the latest Kanye album, 808s & Heartbreak. The video is directed by Nabil, who’s previously worked with Common, John Legend, Will.I.Am as well as Kanye on his video for “Champion”. When I first saw this video I was trippin’ cus of the effects, I thought it was the download feed, but then I quickly realized this is the same technique that Chairlift used for their video “Evident Utensil”, which was posted last week. Coincidence? Let’s hope so. The technique used is called “Data Moshing” where the images get pixelated.

Couple of dope new jams for y’all to check out. The first comes by way of atek, yes I admit, I finally like a track that you sent through…I ked I ked. The song is “Day ‘N Nite” by Kid Cudi, but this version is remixed by Fool’s Golds own Jori Hulkkonen. The track is featured on a 12″ vinyl that is available now for a limited time and I have to say this is a must cop as it has Chromeo’s remix of Treasure Fingers “Cross The Dancefloor”. Check out Turntable lab to cop that. Jori Hulkkonen’s remix is definitely bangin’, dare I say better then Crookers remix?

The next track is “Solid Gold” from up and coming group The Golden Filter. They’re definitely going to gain some massive traction this year, everything they do is pretty crazy. Check out their remix of Cut Copy’s “Far Away”.

So I’ve been reading a lot of these “Top 10 albums of 2008″ list in the last little while and decided, hell our staff here at Killahbeez has some pretty dope taste in music, we should also do one.
