I remember when the video for Souls of Mischief’s “That’s When Ya Lost” dropped, I was intrigued by this Oakland crew’s new styled rhyme flow. The beat was hard hitting, and they had some pretty clever wordplay at that time.
A few months later, I happened to peep the video for “‘93 til Infinity,” and I just about lost it. They took a mellow Rhodes sample from Billy Cobham, sped it up, laced it with horns and other samples from the track, and regaled us with tales about how it’s done in East Oakland on a Saturday night. This was the song that inspired me to cop that album, one that still reigns in my top favorites. The song might be 15 years old, but the sound is fresh, and its message still remains relevant.
