How many people out there own that tin boxed set of Band of Brothers? I think it’s probably one of the most viewed mini series’ ever. Well, after a LONG hiatus from war-focused mini series’, HBO is finally at it again with The Pacific. The 10-segment epic will most likely be told in the same vein as Band of Brothers with a few recurring characters (three marines during WWII), but a different overall message with each. Again like Band of Brothers, the cast is relatively unknown, but you can probably bank on this series launching a few careers. The strength of Band of Brothers wasn’t just the amazing war scenes, it was the humanizing effect and the realism it instilled with each episode. If HBO can capture only have of what Band of Brothers did, then I think a lot of people will be happy. Judging from the trailer below, I think they’re close to say the least.

This show, Eastbound & Down is one of my latest obsessions and why would it not be. Here are my reasons: 1. The mullet, 2. His redneck-ish attitude and 3. great writing on the show, it’s friggin’ hilarious people! The HBO show stars Danny McBride, known for roles in Tropic Thunder, Superbad and Pineapple Express to name a few, he definitely plays the role perfectly. The opening episode (seen below) shows a baseball player, Kenny Powers, that takes a career dive sending him into obscurity, basically he’s a John Rocker multiplied by maybe 2 or 3 cus honestly Rocker can’t be all that far from this character.

With his failed baseball career he’s forced to retire and moves in with his brother’s family, whom are fairly relighious, while Kenny Powers (McBride) is pretty far from that. In the first few episodes he tries to “rehab” back to the majors, while doing so he takes on a job as a high school PE teacher. This is where he sees his first love April, played by Katy Mixon, which I have to state, I have a slight crush on her. He finds out she’s engaged to the Princpal of the school that he’s at, but decides not to let that stand in the way of pursuing her or at least attempting to. Along the way of trying to woo her and rehabing, he gets himself into a bunch of trouble and tries to hustle to scrounge up some cash, adventures like these introduce us to characters such as  Ashley Schaeffer (Will Ferrell), the baseball player that ended his career (played by Craig Robinson, better known as Darryl from The Office) and the hilarious stoner Clegg (Ben Best).

The show airs on HBO on Sunday at 10:30pm for both Canada and the US. Although the season is a short one, with 6 episodes and the season finale airing this past Sunday, though you can probably catch re-runs. Check out the first episode below.

Earlier in December, well actually mid-December near the holidays, Skillz dropped a “wrap up” for the critically acclaimed HBO show The Wire, which just had its series finale earlier this year…*sheds tear. Anyways Skillz summarizes all 5 seasons of the show in a 5 minute song with visuals accompanying it and might I say does a pretty damn good job too.

I actually meant to post this up early last week, but have been busy. Finally though the complete set is being released on DVD, I know a few people were waiting for this, including yours truly. Ladies, this is most definitely a must-cop for that man in your life for the upcoming Christmas season.This 33-disc set includes all of the 86 episodes and of course tons of special features such as interviews, commentary, a 3-disc soundtrack and a 56-page collector’s album to name some of the more significant things included. Retailing at $255 in the US or about $299 in Canada.

Definitely know that I’m a bit late on this one as the DVD came out last Tuesday and well, I’ve been away in New York meeting up with folks and the rest of the Killahbeez east coast members. But back on to the topic at hand, this is the fifth and final season of the HBO drama, The Wire. The previous seasons took you through the perspective of the projects, the docks, city hall, the school system and this final season takes you on a journey through the perspective of the media. Easily one of the most refreshing shows out there. Set should run you between $39 – 50, hit the amazon link below on our page.

Even though reviewers panned the Sex and the City movie as “mediocre” at best, I put on my Manolos, drank up my Cosmos and joined my girlfriends for an afternoon at the movies on opening weekend. And let me tell you: Die-hard fans of the six-season long HBO series will get “Carrie-d” away!

The movie opens perfectly: the theme song done Fergalicious style, photos from past shows summing up Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda and Carrie’s experiences over the years and a voice over by Sarah Jessica Parker. Most fans going to see the movie already know that Carrie is supposed to marry Mr. Big during the course of the film, thanks to spoiler photos of SJP donning a dreamy Vivienne Westwood gown hitting the Net early into production, however, fans might not expect the drama, tears and laughs that follow.

At 2.5 hours long, the movie does actually feel like a movie (and not like five regular TV episodes sewn together) with one cohesive storyline from start to finish. I must say that the acting done by pretty much all of the actors translates really well from the boob tube to the big screen. I think that my favorite performance from the girls is by Kristen Davis (Charlotte), who is fierce and sassy and very entertaining to watch.

And about the two most important aspects of the movie: the fashion and the sex. Both are… well, orgasmic! All we see on the girls, Carrie especially, are labels, labels, labels! She just goes from one drool-worthy couture gown to the next from Diane von Furstenberg to Christian Dior and of course, never without her toes delicately peeping out from a pair of highly-coveted Manolos.

Fashionistas might also notice that this movie features a large selection of Louis Vuitton products. From the Richard Prince Motard Firebird bag Carrie gives Jennifer Hudson’s character as a Christmas gift, to the Denim Patchwork Bowling bag J-Hud “rents,” to the Damier Azur Boite Falcons travel case Charlotte takes to Mexico and the Limelight Clutch that Carrie carries throughout the film, stylist Patricia Fields doesn’t go light on sprinkling on the LV and probably did so as a tribute to the house’s mark on the history of fashion and to complement classic, timeless pieces with more trendy, avant-garde garmets.

Now on to the sex. Well, there’s lots of it, and it’s heavy enough stuff to carry an 18-A rating (my friends and I were asked to show our IDs when buying tix). So girls (and guys) won’t be disappointed.

Overall, I give this movie four Cosmopolitans and a Muff Dive out of five! Obviously, those who haven’t watched many of the show’s TV episodes aren’t going to get as much satisfaction out of the movie as say, your’s truly, but nevertheless, Sex and the City offers audiences a fun and flirty, romantic chic flick that is as sweet and fluffy as your grandma’s lemon merengue pie!
