The year was 1994. The setting, summer time in New York City. This comedy / drama takes you on a journey through the main character, Luke Shapiro, who spends his summer before college selling weed throughout New York City. He ends up trading weed for some therapy with his shrink (Ben Kingsley), which honestly was pretty funny, the conversation the two have throughout the movie. Luke also has a crush on his shrinks’ step daughter and his high school classmate, Stephanie. The reason for the film name The Wackness, is because of Luke’s inability to see things positively and just living in the moment, as Stephanie puts it, “Your all about the wackness, while I’m all about the dopeness”. In addition to this coming of age story this film definitely throws you back to the Golden Era of Hip Hop with tracks like: “The What”, “Summertime”, “The World is Yours”, “Can I Kick It?” and a few other tracks that aren’t actually on the soundtrack such as Pharcyde. Check out the trailer above or visit the film’s site here.
Just Blaze drops a mixtape featuring over 50 tracks from the early 90’s. The mix is dope, but there is a bit of talking on it, which I’m not a huge fan of, but hey this is Just Blaze. Features a ton of tracks from artists like Main Source, A Tribe Called Quest, Naughty By Nature, Black Moon, Das Efx, Big L, Mobb Deep and more. Tracklist is after the jump and download link below.
This Mixtape Monday features The Rub. Well I’ve been meaning to post this for awhile now, but I wanted to wait for these guys to drop a few more mixes before we spread the love. The Rub has gone and done a collective mix of some of the greatest and influential songs of their respective years. The era, the ’90s. Yeah you remember that shit, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Biggie Smalls, Ice Cube, Gang Starr and the list goes on and on. My favorite of all the mixes are ‘94, ‘95 and ‘96, the height of the “Golden Era” of Hip-Hop. Listen to two of my favorite streams below and hop on over to Brooklyn Radio to download the rest of the series. They just dropped Vol. 19 1997 last night.
