Being a fan of Aeroplane’s cosmic balearic-esque and nu-pop jams, I thought a Mixtape Monday feature would be appropriate.  For those that followed Stephen Fasano and Vito de Luca’s work, their benchmark may just be the wonderfully orchestrated Resident Advisor mix back in August 08.  And if so, this mix won’t disappoint (or any of their chart mixes for that matter) either.  But I do have to point out the stand out tracks this time around include The Swiss’s ‘Bubble Bath‘, Hot Chip’s latest single, ‘One Life Stand‘ and Flight Facilities ‘Crave You‘.

Dummy Mix 20 by Friendly Fires | via Dummymag.com

2009 brought a ton of opportunities for myself as the sole photographer for Killahbeez. I had the pleasure of shooting Sasquatch! Music Festival, Rock The Bells, Virgin Music Festival, No Doubt, Pearl Jam, Sebastien Tellier, Peaches, The xx, Metric and the list goes on and on. So I decided to compile some of my favorite shots from this past year and share them with you the readers who may or may not have seen some of these photos. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I had a blast taking them. More to come in 2010…I hope.

Below some of the photos are the stories behind them and how I ended up with the shot.

At the beginning of this concert I had to choose. Position myself in front of Dave Navarro or Perry Farrell cus it was going to be unlikely that I was going to have a chance to move back and forth with the amount of photographers shooting this show. I picked Navarro, why? Cus I figured Farrell would come to him and I was right and when he didn’t I ended up with epic side shots like the one below. I love the color explosions in the one above and the light flare just below Navarro’s guitar is sick. The smoke and lighting make it an epic shot. The one above was shot on a fisheye.

This shot here was at a Fool’s Gold gig which featured Treasure Fingers as well as Jokers of The Scene. The guys from JOTS, I guess bumped into this girl named Vanessa and she had some pretty fly ass nails and so this shot came about.

Simian Mobile Disco. The lighting at their shows are always crazy. Dark as hell, but if you capture shit in the right lighting or situation like I luckily was able too, you end up with some pretty cool shots. The one above looks like a space ship is beaming its lights down on him, while the one below captures the essence of their show. Them twisting knobs and playing shit live in front of you.

Another crazy dark show. The band, The Golden Filter, is known to have this air of mysteriousness around them, which explains their dark lighting for live shows and the lead singer covering parts of her face with her hair. I like these two shots because of the lighting as well.

For this shot I armed myself with my 10.5mm fisheye lens and positioned in front of Kim when I noticed Julian coming towards me. I stuck my arm up in the air and caught this shot as Kim stood up in the background.

I love Sebastien Tellier. In particular his last album, Sexuality, was the fuckin’ bees knees. I loved the way he looked / was put together. Really clean look and then you have this face full of facial hair and disheveled hair going every which way.

Kele of Bloc Party is always good to shoot. I’ve photographed Bloc Party twice and he always provides great emotion on stage. This shot is a prime example of him just blasting through the mic and strumming his guitar.

This was at Sasquatch! Music Festival. By now you’ve probably seen the video that the guy above is featured in. It’s had over 2 million views, I provided a video below in case you haven’t seen it. I saw this kid on the first day and he was having the time of his life. I even have pictures of him eating grass, like the lawn he’s dancing on. Anyways this picture kinda captures the fun spirit of the festival. Shit was a great experience.

This show was a great pleasure to shoot. There were no restrictions and Maja Ivarsson played it up for photographers as did her band mates below. Energetic concert from beginning to end.

This shot above was also at The Sounds. I dipped out into the crowd as I usually do. I saw a great path between some concert goers and the Maja on stage and snapped. I ended up with this photo above. I love the light kissing down on one of the audience’s head and the fingers and one fist pump.

The three are my personal favorites because of the contrast and lighting in them. I’m not very good at taking black and white photos, but these ones are definitely favorites of mine.

Stuck in between two monitor speakers up at the stage, I thought, wouldn’t it be fuckin’ great if Ben Harper sets up right in between these two monitors. BAM. It’s like he heard me. Swapped out my regular lens for my fisheye and this was the result.

One word. Legends. Three groups I listened to when I was first introduced to hiphop: NWA, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Shot with a fisheye on this one.

Erykah Badu at Sasquatch! She came out and had such an air of presence about her that you couldn’t explain nor fuck with. Oh and before I forget she came out rocking tight leather black pants. Soooo good.

I photographed a Girl Talk show the previous year, but the photos didn’t turn out very well. I was still adjusting and learning to shoot on digital. So when he came back again I thought it would be great to give it another go. A friend of mine described the shot above as a modern day image of The Last Supper. Ya that Last Supper. While the one below is pretty dope too. I saw this girl prior to the show running around trying to find a way to get a bracelet so that she could dance on stage. Well, guess she got one, and I got her headbanging pretty hard.

I just like the photo above. It just catches my eye every time and I’m not quite sure why. While the photo below I thought was pretty hilarious. One of the concert goers dancing behind Gogol Bordello had shaved his body hair to resemble that of  Eugene Hutz’s facial hair. See above then look at his body hair below. HAHAHAHAHA

One of my favorite shots all weekend at Virgin Music Festival. Jimmy Shaw of Metric, on stage with Broken Social Scene playing the trumpet. The composition and colors stand out to me.

Canadian musician K-OS, the whole photo set I took of him, I would describe with one word. Colorful. His clothes, mixed with the lighting and his movements.

Lykke Li, I had waited for this concert for a loooooong time. The previous time she came to town I had chosen to attend Yelle instead, it was on the same night. This time she came back and I got my shit in order nice and early. A picture of her singing out to the crowd. Shot looks so peaceful, doesn’t it.

The band: Monotonix. This was at Sasquatch! Music Festival and was the most insane show I’ve ever photographed. These dudes don’t set up on a conventional stage, they put their shit in the field with the audience and rock hard. The shot above is a shot of the lead singers ass, this was probably theeeeee most awkward shot ever, not the picture itself, but I was all contorted and shit. I was also shooting this whole show with a 10.5 mm fisheye lens so although it may not seem like I was up close, trust me I was VERY close.

The one below is also ill. He was standing on a speaker box, I was on the photo railing. I love how the cord appears to whip me across the face. Rest assure it didn’t, but the following shot (which isn’t posted here) has him bending down and melting my face off by shredding hard on his guitar.

Whenever I photograph concerts and the singer or band leader is a woman, I always without fail photograph their shoes. Why? The above shot pretty explains it. These Jeremy Scott / Reebok joints are soooo dope. These are what Santigold wore as she rocked the crowd, in what was probably one of my favorite performances all weekend from that festival.

The audience at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver last night got to see three great bands. It was a great show full of either chill out tunes or technified jungle beats and maraca madness.

Newcomer Holly Miranda (above) hit the stage  in the most underwhelming manner. First, no one knew, or at least I didn’t, that there was another act aside from The xx and Friendly Fires. Second, no one noticed that Holly had taken to the stage. People probably thought she was a sound check girl but then the lights dimmed and she started playing. Lastly, don’t judge a book by its cover. The girl can sing. She sounds like a mix between Feist and Adele. In fact, I would like to hear her sing some blues because her voice has the right kind of sultriness to it.

I had no idea who she was, only found out when I hit up the merchandise table to ask. All I know is her name, that she’s from Brooklyn, that she just released her first EP, and that she’s going to be very successful. Check her out at www.hollymiranda.com

Shortly after Miranda graced us with her presence, The xx took to the stage. Not going to lie, although I like them and could listen to their album on repeat, their set wasn’t the most exciting. I guess you can’t expect much from a group that plays super chill music. With that said their live set sounded incredible, great to listen to with a group of friends and chill out to.

I was quite surprised to see how many people were at the Commodore. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Commodore that packed. Despite being a newer band (they only released their first full-length album in August) The xx have made quite the name for themselves. I know their album, xx, is going to be on many people’s top ten of 2009.

The best song of their set, and the last, was “Infinity”. The rhythm and beat to the song were incredible; the song was play-the-song-on-repeat kind of good.

After what seemed like a ridiculously long sound check, the Friendly Fires took to the stage. Where these guys get their energy, I have no idea but I’d like some, please and thanks.

Their last Vancouver show was crazy. Aside from the tiny stage they jammed on at Richards on Richards, their encore was full of crazy antics. I remember their sound last year being more Indie-Punk based. At the show last night, their sound was more Jazz-infused, technified Indie-Punk. Does that make sense? Anyways, they were awesome.

They opened with “Love Sick” and within seconds of starting it they were all girating. Yes, girating. By the second song, lead singer Ed Macfarlane was already drenched in sweat. In “Photo Booth” Macfarlane sings something about “you and me in a photo booth”…honestly honey, you shouldn’t be in such small spaces. With the movements you make you’re only going to give yourself a concussion which will end the photo booth party and then no ones getting any. I’ll leave the “any” open to interpretation.

Highlights of the FF’s set were “Lovesick” with it’s jazzy-fiesta-technified- jungle-beat sound, “Kiss Of Life” which made me wish I was head banging, elbow jerking, and hip shaking with all the people around me, and “Paris” which drove the crowd insane. I honestly haven’t seen an audience that pumped in a long time. It was refreshing.  If you want to see an awesome band, be part of an awesomely energized crowd, and shake what your mama gave ya all at the same time, check out the Friendly Fries.

Not exactly new, as it came out a month or so ago, but new for myself is this second single / video, “Basic Space” by The xx. A band that I’ve recently started to hear about quite a bit and found out that they’ll be touring with Friendly Fires starting November to the end of December. A concert that should not be missed. A few days ago the Mercury Award Nominations went down and a Killahbeez friend, Eleanor Conway was on hand to attend and interview some of the nominees. For those outside of the UK or Ireland, the Mercury Awards is an annual music award given for the best album within the UK or Ireland. This years nominees included: La Roux, Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas, Friendly Fires, Kasabian and many more. Music heads from all around Vancouver will be mourning on July 20th, when Richard’s on Richards closes it’s doors for the final time. The land has been bought and will be developed into, what else…a condo. The club, Richard’s on Richards has long been considered as Vancouver’s version of the Lower East Sides’ “CBGB” in New York. The venue has seen countless talents roll through and perform. I, myself am not sad as a photographer, cus really, let’s be real, the lighting sucked for photography, buuuuuuuut with that said as a music fan the venue had one of the best sounds in the city. The acoustics within the old building were beautiful and some of the best shows I’ve seen in this city were in Richard’s on Richards because of the close intimacy between the crowd and the stage. So…here are a collection of some of my favourite shots that I took in the venue.

Oh if you’re wondering, the owners are moving down to Seymour Street where the old A & B sound use to be, right across the street from BCIT. The last show at the venue will take place on July 20th and local band Five Alarm Funk.

So by now y’all know former Killahbeez writer AJK has been off doing his music thing. Last Summer he released his EP, which a large portion of it was inspired from his time in New York City. Then he dropped his Ladyhawke “Back of the Van” remix for folks. Now, he’s back with a full on mix for you all to bump for the summer and beyond. The mix contains some of the dopest jams right now as well as the new Boys Noize track “Jeffer” and the unreleased The Juan MacLean “One Day” Grandtheft remix. Perfect for a road trip, the gym, the drive in to work or whatever, 74 mins of straight goodness.

Recently I embarked on a road trip where I drove about 10 hours (due to holiday traffic) to my destination and 8 hours back home (from 11pm – 7am) and while I was away I was on the road for about 3 hours per day for 3 days. So needless to say I got mad familiar with my MP3 player. It was then that I realized how essential your tunes are to keep you…well me, in this case, awake during these drives. With the Summer basically here and people taking road trips and such I’ve set out and brought you my top 10…ahem…top 15 essential tunes I had to have on the road and these are in no particular order (I tried but gave up essentially).

To start this I laid down some rules. No originals, the majority of the tracks below are remixes as you’ll see, but these were the jams I actually rocked as oppose to the originals. Tried to restrict myself to remixes that dropped between January of 2009 and June of 2009, so we have the freshest of the fresh here.

One remix that I would’ve loved to have added to this list is Grandtheft’s remix of The Juan MacLeans’ “One Day”, but the track hasn’t officially dropped yet and I ain’t gonna be the one that leaks it. After all that camp has been great with Killahbeez. I will say though that I had this remix on repeat numerous times on my road trip, so be on the look out for it when it drops.

Thanks to Voules Random, I came across one half of Trompe Le Monde, Mikey Mmmuscles aka Mike B.  In support of his Canadian West Coast tour, Mikey Mmmuscles created the TTTOUR MMMIX filled with Parisian House, Aussie synth pop and DFA favorites to name a few genres.  Basically something for everyone.  Enjoy this week’s Mixtape Monday and indulge in the download link and tracklisting below (for you individual track hypem mp3 hunter and gatherers).

On a side note, Vega’s track – ‘No Reasons’ is effin amazing.  Has Texas been the missing link for phenomenal Northern American electropop?  Aside from GhostHustler and Vega, are there any other hidden gems in the Lone Star state?

Came across 4 new remixes, all of which are banging in their own right. The first one I came across is the Grandtheft remix of Cut Copys’ “Hearts On Fire”, I remember AJK telling me that this was being worked on months ago. Other remixes include Tom Wrecks remix of Santigolds “Unstoppable”  and a pretty sick remix of Friendly Fires “Jump In The Pool” by Thin White Duke.
