Pitchfork has recently taken on the dubious task of listing the top 500 tracks of the 2000s, something definitely easier said than done. Their list starts off with N.E.R.D’s “Run To The Sun” and works up to Kid Cudi vs Crookers “Day N Nite”, which honestly I thought might’ve ranked higher, but this remix was just a huge personal favorite of mine.

The top 20 I gotta say is pretty dope with the exception of a few tracks, such as R. Kelly’s “Ignition”, that was some hometown love right there no doubt. But Outkast “B.O.B”, I couldn’t agree more. Think of a track that hits you harder and leaves more of resonating feeling…can’t can ya, cus you’re thinking about how dope this track really is and you’re probably looking it right now…here lemme help you.

I don’t usually write much or anything on these afternoon jam posts, cus it’s all about the music. But HOLY FUCK. This minimix is fuckin’ a-m-a-z-i-n-g. It’s 5 minutes of pure bliss. In 3 days photographer, Matthew Wartman assembled this time-lapse video of Niagara Falls with his Nikon D90.  The next 2 minutes and 7 seconds is a real visual treat with DeVotchKa’s ‘The Winner Is’ as a well suited soundtrack.  The first 4 seconds sorta reminds me of Daft Punk’s Coney Island invasion.  Whereas the rest reminds me of summer trips up along the east coast of Canada with Dave and family when I was still able to cross the border.  Enjoy.

The Twelves “Night Vision” Daft Punk Cover

On Thursday night March 5, disco / electro / house heads in Vancouver were treated to the musical stylings of Alan Braxe. Braxe, one of the true originators of the French Touch  sound of disco-house, is probably best known for his early work with Thomas Bangalter (One half of Daft Punk) as Stardust and in particular the song that they released “Music Sounds Better With You”. But the man has always kept grindin’ and makin’ people shake their asses whether it be his own music, solo remixes or teaming up with Fred Falke and blowing peoples minds.

Anyways the DJ Set on Thursday night, needless to say, was effin’ amazing. He played joints across the board, freaking some newer shit like Treasure Fingers and then dropping Chaka Khan on heads then changing it up with his own remixes. There was no doubt that music heads in the house were enjoying every little bit of it. Oh and did I mention, the man is nice as hell and mad humble. That and he’s a friggin’ chain smoker, I think I saw him duck down below the decks smoking at least 1800 times within his set, okay more like 8 – 10 times, but daaaaamn son.

I actually had the opportunity to shoot some shots for Killahbeez, but without some help this opportunity wouldn’t have been possible. Few artists can break down language barriers and find success, yet Yelle, a French Pop Artiste, can certainly state that claim as she has done just that. Her music, despite being sung entirely in French, has gone global and specifically infecting English speaking countries with her sound, yes sound. Listen to her album Pop-Up and you’ll understand. The electro-pop sounds make you euphoric and you can’t help but dance. Her live show takes the energy of the album and multiplies it by a 1000, giving you a feeling that you’ve just enter an aerobics session. So it was a great pleasure to have a chance to interview her last month, touching on topics such as how the group started, musical and fashion influences and a host of other topics.

Killahbeez: Hi Yelle, thanks for taking the time and doing this interview with us.

Yelle: No prob!

KB: So for those who are new fans of Yelle, can you breakdown how the group formed with you, GrandMarnier and Tepr and why the group decided on the name Yelle?

Yelle: I met GrandMarnier first and we became good friends. We decided to do music together in 2005 and we chose the name Yelle at the beginning for “you enjoy life” and it was just YEL, but then we decided to feminize it with one more L and E! Tepr met GrandMarnier because he used to be a journalist and he was writing an article about GM’s previous band. We asked him to join us on stage and for the album in 2006.

KB: Your album, Pop-Up, has a fun and playful sound to it, how do you translate that to the stage and bring that energy out?

Yelle: The live show is like an extra power of the album. It’s like a dj set with the energy of instruments (GM on the drums, Tepr on keyboards, me singing and hitting my floor tom). Performing live is what we prefer; we are a rock band when we are on stage!

KB: [laughter]. Yeah I couldn’t agree more.

KB: Writing for this album, how much of the lyrics are about your life and how much of it is just about a 25 year old girl (which you happen to be as well) living life and having fun?

Yelle: With GM (GrandMarnier) we find the theme in our life, in my real 25years old girl life! Of course it’s funny to imagine some stories but it’s always apart of reality!

KB: So do you feel that singing in French has been a barrier at all to breaking into the North American market, or do you feel like good music is good music and people don’t necessarily care about the language?

Yelle: It’s maybe exotic for English speaking people to listen French songs. But yes the music is very important and if the people are curious they’ll try to find the translation of the songs. It’s not a barrier, we have this particularity and it’s cool!

KB: Yeah I was definitely initially drawn to the energy of the music before diving into the lyrics a bit more.

KB: How would you describe your sound? I mean in some songs there are times when it definitely sounds like you are rapping, yet maintaining a pop / electro vibe.

Yelle: We did a real electro pop album with some fantasy sounds. I think I’m more a singer than a rapper; my rap is so old school! I discovered the rap music with Warren G and Snoop Dogg when I was a teenager and yes I like that!

KB: You mentioned Snoop Dogg and Warren G, who or what else influences your music and sound?

Yelle: I’m a big fan of Pop music with Madonna, Blur, Prince, and more and I was listening lots of rock bands and French singer when I was young, with my parents. Then I had a crush on Daft Punk, with my bro.

KB: Speaking of Daft Punk, a lot of French artists, such as Daft Punk, Justice, DJ Mehdi, SebastiAn and including yourselves, are getting a lot of recognition in the US. Do you feel like each of you are influencing one another with your sounds?

Yelle: It’s not the same sound, and not the same crew. We appreciate them but we can’t say they are an influence, except Daft Punk, for sure, cause they do have songs, you know what I mean, it’s not only about sound, it’s about songs. But we are from the same generation yes, and we all watched the Fresh Prince!

KB: [laughter]

KB: So changing topics here, in all your pictures and in all your videos you’re so well dressed. Who or what influences your fashion sense? Any favorite designers or pieces of clothing that you can’t live without?

Yelle: I like to play with my outfits for a long time! I like to wear colors but black and white stuffs too! I just like to have fun with my style like in my life so I’m a big fan of designers like Jeremy Scott, Andrea Crews, JP Lespagnard or JC de Castelbajac who are really into pop art, they have lots of fun in the way to dress people! I’m a big fan of bags and shoes!

KB: Would you ever think of starting your own clothing line?

Yelle: We have some merch on tour and on a web site call www.recreation-center.com! Creating a clothing line is one of our project, yes.

KB: Going back to the topic of music, Tell us a bit about your experience at Coachella, what was it like performing at such a huge festival? Do you prefer big venues or smaller more intimate venues?

Yelle: Playing in Coachella was totally crazy and amazing!! We were a little bit nervous cause we were playing at the same slot of Portishead but the crowd was there, they were dancing and screaming, it was a very good night for us! We like to play sometimes in little venue to be closed from people but it’s really intense and fun to be on a huge stage too!

KB: What’s next for Yelle, any other projects or collaborations that you can talk about?

Yelle: Katy Perry just asked us for a remix, we did it, but now we really want to focus on the next album. Can’t wait to go back in studio and work.

KB: Anything else you want to say to your fans that read this?

Yelle: We love you!

This weeks Mixtape Monday is by no means a new mix, in fact it officially dropped in January of 2008, but it’s waaaay too banging to not share this gem. NLLR (No Love Lost Records) is a mixtape project that works with up and coming artists and occasionally established ones as well to bring music fans exclusive mixes. The project has now seen over 1.25 million downloads since 2007, pretty sick number. This particular one is done by Anoraak, who is one of Killahbeez’s favorite artists, part of the VALERIE crew. He’s also done some of the dopest remixes out there as well as releasing the mini-album Nightdrive With You, which has some ridiculous jams on there.

This mix is a good representation of the mans’ style of music and quite frankly I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since it was sent to me by my cousin.

Here’s the first official video for U2’s first single “Get On Your Boots” from their upcoming 12th album No Line on the Horizon which is scheduled to be released on March 3rd. The video is directed by Alex Courtes who’s also done videos for Daft Punk, Kylie Minogue, Franz Ferdinand as well as previously working with U2 as well.

Howell Evans from U2 said that the video is “based around the idea that men have f***ed things up so badly, politically, economically and socially.” He added, “That it’s really time we handed things over to women. The finished video is brilliant. (Alex) really nailed it.”

In December 2008, I watched a video featuring Kanye West’s samples on 808’s & Heartbreaks, College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation.  It was hard for me to compile a list of the songs featured in the video but thankfully, with an instant Google search, I came upon Kevin Nottingham’s website.

According to Kevin, Kanye West has sampled 79 tracks throughout his entire career.  The bulk of the songs are from the 1970’s and have appeared on Kanye’s albums and songs that Kanye produced for other artist.

“Two of this site’s top articles to this day are Kanye West: The Samples, Part 1 and Kanye West: The Samples, Part 2. Well you can scrap those links and bookmark this post right here. Those two posts are consistently in this blog’s top ten daily and the majority of my referrers are from people doing a search for “Kanye West samples”. I decided to make it a little easier and put them all in one compilation. Yes, ALL OF THEM. Well, not quite. We have 79 of Kanye’s samples that he has used throughout his career. The only samples that we chose to leave off are the samples from College Dropout, Late Registration,Graduation, Common’s Be, and Common’s Finding Forever. They would have just made the compilation too long, but you can download those separately. This set of Kanye West samples is 462 MB! It took Thomas and I quite some time to compile these, even though we already had most of the samples.  Feel free to add to this list in the comments.

In addition to the album sample sets we put out, we’ll be putting a few of these producer sample sets together from time to time. These, obviously, will not be as frequent as they do take a lot of time to compile. In honor of President-elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration on January 20, 2009, Adam Freeland remixed Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic”.  The music video to the song was created by artists Dalek, Bill McMullen, Kubrick and few others. The animated video features vinyl toys, photographs of Barack Obama and an Obama action figure.  This is a great remix, especially the video.

On Friday I was chilling and minding my own business, oh who am I kidding. I was still recovering from Diplo the night before when my buddy Ryan hit me up on BBM (Blackberry Messenger) with these words: “go to the mad decent blog and download the sany pitbull mix, then thank me later”. With a recommendation like that you know I had to go and download this and hear it for myself. After hearing the mix for myself, I definitely give this two thumbs up. Something you can definitely listen to while working out, driving to and from work or pre-partying before you head out. The mix is fairly versatile. Track 4 and 5 are easily my favs.

MSTRKRFT (read as “Master-Kraft”) is an electronic group out of Toronto. Actually this year at the Toronto Virgin Music Fest they replaced SebastiAn, when he missed his flight and they didn’t disappoint. The group came together in 2005 and consists of JFK (Jesse F. Keeler) and Al-P (Alex Puodziukas). The group has remixed over 30 songs of various genres including the latest remix of John Legend’s song “Green Light”.

On Friday I attended Fist Of God, which is the official name for the MSTRKRFT tour as well as their upcoming album, which is expected to drop in January of 2009. The stop I was at had Felix Cartal opening up, but there will be various openers throughout the tour such as DJ A-Trak, DJ Aoki, LA Riots, Congorock, DJ Assault and the aforementioned Felix Cartal. Blueprint Events, which is known as one of Vancouver’s best electronic promoters for a minute now, was hosting the event as well as the after party.

The event took place at Celebrities Night club and was fully packed, in fact this show could have easily taken place at Commodore Ballroom to accommodate more folks, but nonetheless the vibes were good as people were ready to dance their fuckin’ asses off. The duo came on at around 1am and they immediately had the crowd going crazy, as their sound is fairly distinct with that 4/4 beat and heavy heavy synths.

Like usual they played a range of stuff including their own remixes, from the Presets to Dem Franchise Boyz to Cupid to Daft Punk to Usher to Kylie Minogue and throwing in stuff from their first album as well. The set was filled with energy throughout and both MSTRKRFT and the crowd seemed to be feeding off of one another and it was non-stop. The set ended at about 2:30am, but an encore had JFK continue to rock the house til well past 3am. If you left this party not soaked from head to toe in sweat, then you my friend were not partying hard enough. Overall one word can describe this set. EPIC!
