Mixtape Monday: Vettig & Morsig #14 Lard and Loops

Posted on 25 August 2008 by Van

Our friends, Vettig & Morsig, from Amsterdam have sent in another contagious mixtape.  If you all recall, I’ve featured DJ Tron back in March.  Seven mixtapes later and we have another stellar mix with tracks by SebastiAn, Daft Punk, Boys Noize, etc.  The real icing on the cake is Erol Alkan’s remix of Sweet Dreams.  On a side note, I’m wondering if there is a numeric and name theme going on.  DJ Tron’s debut was #7 and the latest is #14.  And keeping up with the “Dirty and Greasy” beats theme, this one is conveniently named Lard and Loops.  Maybe I should ask Milan before jumping to any conclusions.

As always the track listing is provided on the back  for avid mp3 single collectors and the zSHARE is here.

Killahbeez Exclusive: An Interview with DJ Mehdi

Posted on 18 August 2008 by Mona Alice Oakenfold

DJ Mehdi

Mehdi Faveris-Essadi, better known simply as DJ Mehdi, is a hip-hop electro DJ outta Paris, France. Since getting started in the mid ‘90s, Mehdi has knocked down some collabos with Daft Punk, MC Solaar, Chromeo and Busy P, among others. Signed onto French label Ed Banger Records, Mehdi has brought some of the freshest mixes to all corners of the globe. And despite his current touring schedule, Mehdi recently gave some time to Killahbeez to answer some questions we’d been wondering.

You’re mad touring all over Europe right now. How’s that going?

DJ Mehdi: Going very good, thank you. I love touring here in Europe. It’s my home. I never get tired of it. France, U.K., Germany plus Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, so much things to see, so many good people, and the food is usually great. What more could I ask for?

Review: Girl Talk

Posted on 26 July 2008 by Mona Alice Oakenfold

Girl Talk

Thursday, July 24 – Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver

Pittsburgh, Pa., DJ Gregg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, brought the party to the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver on Thursday, July 24. The highly-anticipated event was sold out weeks in advance, and it was thanks to our friends over at Sealed with a Kiss that two of us ‘Beez got in.

A long line was formed outside the venue by 10 p.m., and inside, openers Twin Crystals were makin’ a whole lotta racket that the crowd flooding in didn’t seem to be feelin’. I don’t mean to be a hater, but the thrash guitar, almost screamo sounds of Twin Crystals just didn’t seem to be a good lead up to the pop/ hip-hop/ electro vibe of Girl Talk. Luckily, after the band’s question, “So, do you guys want to hear another song?” was met with a significant amount of boos, Twin Crystals left the stage, and a local DJ spun some cool and relaxed reggae beats that got the hipsters out onto the dance floor.

Girl Talk set up promptly. Nothing fancy – just his basic DJ equipment on a single table, and started the show at 11 p.m. The crowd went absolutely wild as he shouted, “What’s up, Vancouver? So glad so many of you came out on a Thursday!” and threw on T.I.’s “What You Know About That.”

Walter Meego - Forever

Posted on 13 July 2008 by Van

This has been my jam all weekend long.  After having heard Through a Keyhole from Alina, I was excited to see Walter Meego’s latest single, Forever.  Apparently, Forever has been featured on the show, Ugly Betty and a Heineken commercial. Having read their wiki article, I’m not sure how Justin Sconza and Colin Yarck can be compared to the likes of Daft Punk or John Lennon. However, these guys excel at producing fun synth pop hits. Forever is featured on their debut album, Voyager, and you can purchase it on iTunes. A big thanks goes to Travis of Big Stereo for posting up this video.

Daft Punk’s Pattern of Emotions and Activities (2000) Graph

Posted on 16 June 2008 by Mona Alice Oakenfold

Daft Punk Graph

This handy little graph is from my new favorite time waster, GraphJam, which describes itself as “pop culture for people in cubicles.” Yep, sounds about right.

I’ve always wondered what a scientific approach to Daft Punk would look like.

Kanye Visually Remixed

Posted on 23 March 2008 by Van

Flashing Light’s video editor, Derrick Lee worked on the below videos for Mr. West’s listening party last summer. For those that have been following this blog would think I’d prefer the Akira x Stronger video. This of course references my many posts on anything relevant to Daft Punk. Then theres the anime element. My affinity leans towards the Good Morning clip with 2001: A Space Odyssey visuals this time. According to Kanye, more videos will slowly be leaked. That of course means I’d probably drop my jaw at each succeeding remixed video release.
