On Saturday night, I had just finished editing photos from the Deadmau5 / Burns event and feeling a bit bored. Not really in the mood to actually see anybody I thought to myself that it would be cool if we could offer a mix just for our readers, essentially a collection of songs that I’m currently digging this month. Thus “Boner Jams” was born. These are essentially jams that give me a musical boner when I hear them, production wise all solid tunes. With that said the transitions are somewhat rough on a few of these songs, but hey 1. it’s been a while for me and 2. I did this mix all in under 2 hours and, *ahem, designed the above cover. But in any case I would love to hear your feedback cus we plan on doing this on the regular.

See every month we’re gonna compile the most downloaded songs from that month off of the Afternoon Jams segment and create a mini-mix that you all can download. Anyways we did this for fun and I definitely had fun just messing around making this. So enjoy.

The title says it all.  24 year old Kseniya Simonva is a talented artist who expresses live art with sand and a glass table.  In this particular clip, she illustrates a variety of sceneries and emotions when telling the tale of Germany’s takeover of Ukraine.  Her handstrokes mate perfectly with the background music and breathes new life into story telling.  Enjoy!

On a side note, can somebody help me confirm the score at the 6:13 mark is Estella’s theme from Great Expectations?

Came across 4 new remixes, all of which are banging in their own right. The first one I came across is the Grandtheft remix of Cut Copys’ “Hearts On Fire”, I remember AJK telling me that this was being worked on months ago. Other remixes include Tom Wrecks remix of Santigolds “Unstoppable”  and a pretty sick remix of Friendly Fires “Jump In The Pool” by Thin White Duke.

The blogosphere is a wonderful thing, especially when it comes to discovering new musical talents.  Personally, I enjoy digging up as much as information as possible on a new group that piques my interest.  The Golden Filter first blessed avid readers with ‘Solid Gold’ and their remix of Peter Bjorn and John’s ‘Lay It Down’.  But aside from the slew of remixes and hit singles found, not much else is known about this mysterious group.  As seen throughout the interview and live performances, the band likes to keep their anonymity.  Rather than bore you with in-depth press kits and photos, the disco pop trio from New York would prefer you use your imagination.  Although we know their big secret, what really matters is the music that captivates us, right?

Killahbeez: So for those who are starting to catch onto The Golden Filter, let them know the origins of the group and how it formed as well as the name “The Golden Filter”? Any significant meaning behind it?
The Golden Filter: The origins of the golden filter lie somewhere in the cosmic seas of darkness and desperation… and the way in which the tides rise above that. The Golden Filter was christened 2 days after “Solid Gold” was written as a bit of an inside joke between us. something about 70’s gauzy photography.

KB: Everyone on the internet seems to have given the band huge praises, including us, but listening to and reading some of your past interviews it seems that the group has sort of a mysteriousness about it? Can you talk a bit about why you chose to keep the member(s) a  secret?
TGF: Lots of people who know who we are, and we’ve played live with no masks or anything, so it isn’t quite as much of an orchestrated effort to hide ourselves as you might think, but we won’t spoonfeed anyone information on us. Mystique is interesting to us.  We adore secrets.  The going trend on Myspace has been to plaster photos and identities all over a band’s page with 18 paragraph bios.  When we come across those, we found that we actually never make it through the first sentence without losing interest.  So we just let people listen to the music, close their eyes, use their imaginations, and not worry about who or what made it.

KB: The Golden Filter’s sound definitely can be described as disco-synth pop. Are there any other genres that the group is looking at exploring?
TGF: We’re leaving it open.  Any genre is game…  from Noise to 60s’ french pop.

KB: Who are some of the musical and non-musical influences that have shaped The Golden Filter and their sound?
TGF: Film, Photography, Tarot Cards, Australia, Nature, Thrift Store finds, Animals, Disco, Love, Desperation, Trees, Folk Music, New York City, Old Vinyl.

KB: Speaking of influences, what are the top 5 songs right now that you can’t get enough of?
TGF: Fever Ray – If I Had A Heart, Chromatics – Tomorrow is So Far Away, The White Stripes – The Hardest button to Button, Music Go Music – Warm in the Shadows and The Laughing Light of Plenty – The Rose

KB: “Solid Gold”, “Favourite Things” and “Moonlight Fantasy” are all mind-blowing tracks. With that said, when can fans expect to hear a  full length LP or possibly an EP?
TGF: That’s a good question.  it’s all a mystery…

KB: One of my favorite remixes of 2008 was the one that The Golden Filter did for Cut Copy’s “Far Away”. Was that a case where Cut Copy sought after the group to remix them?  Or was that something The Golden Filter just did out of love?  Are there any other remixes that fans might be able to hear from the group that are being worked on?
TGF: Cut Copy and The Golden Filter are mutual fans of each other’s music, and we were asked to do a remix… we’ve done 4 remixes so far.  Cut Copy, Peter Bjorn and John, Empire Of The Sun, and Little Boots, and we’ve just finished remixing Polly Scattergood. Since we are more interested in writing original songs, we have the luxury of only remixing music we really like…  which is amazing to us.

KB: The band has a busy touring schedule with The Presets coming up, how did that opportunity come up?
TGF: It seemed like a good fit to us, so we said yes…

KB: For all the fans out there reading this, is there a message that you want to relay?
TGF: Silence is GOLDEN!

Some afternoon tracks to take you through…well the afternoon. Found a Bag Raiders remix of Cut Copy’s “Far Away” and the track is banging. Also in this drop is Phoenix’s “1901″, why does the band sound familiar, cus they recently were on Saturday Night Live and they effin’ killed it, definitely looking forward to their album dropping in May. We also have a demo track here from Leighton Meester, better known as Blair on Gossip Girl, she covered Awesome New Republic’s song “Birthday”, and I have to say it sounds pretty good, but then again it is a cover. Next is Keys n Krates, followers of the site know I have a lot of love for these dudes, live remixing I mean c’mon, that shit is hot, they just released a new track and its Aaliyah’s “One In a Million” remixed KnK’s way. And last but not least I’m checking out the Friendly Fires / White Lies concert tonight, so here’s a remix to set it off for others that are attending.

After a year’s hiatus, I decided to head back down to sunny South Beach for WMC 2009.  As the days close in, the folks that run the Winter Music Conference publishes a master list of events.  First thing I noticed at a local bodega was this year’s publication was a pamphlet in comparison to previous years Frank151 mini mag style guides.  Although, having a game plan is to your advantage, you can wing it and still have a fun time.   Just watch out for the tourist-ready alcoholic beverages averaging in at 16 dollars, half priced lunches and breakfast but with a caveat of ridiculously expensive coffee, oj and iced tea.  This is to be expected as a trade off for the hotel poolside cabanas, people watching seats on Ocean Drive and of course the clear blue water/white sand combo in Miami.

As far as music goes, this was my outlet for lots and lots of deep house, broken beat and of course electro pop.  My friends and I planned on hitting up several parties throughout the day until we couldn’t stand anymore.  One piece of advice, if your hotel is in SOBE, stay in SOBE.  The taxis have no issue taking you on the “tourist” route to cross the MacArthur Causeway.  Some parties were a bust aka Tuesday Night at Laundry Bar and Friday Night at White Room.  However, there were some events that stood out and made WMC 09 memorable.

One such event was the Sander Kleinenberg yacht party.  Thoughts of waiting in long lines at Epcot or Universal Studios came to mind and gave me a chuckle.  First, my friends and I walked from 9th and Collins to the Shelborne Resort to redeem our tickets.  One line at the hotel lobby takes you upstairs to the Wanttickets.com suite.  From there, another line gets in contact with a customer service rep.  Next step, much like a reality tv show challenge was to hail a $40 dollar cab ride to the docks before 3:30.  Arrival yielded two more lines to get onto the Biscayne Lady.  But the wait was worthwhile as the food appeased my palate.  The all you can drink bar also came in handy to enjoy progressive house by Sander.  My group and I were definitely loving every aspect of the yacht party.  The rest of Thursday night was a mix between a blur and being woken up to head down to Heathrow Lounge for an event called Sonic Boom.

Friday was a free for all.  I had no game plan other than to hit the Scion Party at the Gansevoort South Resort featuring Annie Mac, A-Trak, Dj Medhi, Riton, Toddla T and Rusko.  However, during the daytime, I did notice Sephora had a line ready for j-pop songstress, Utada Hikaru.  Thanks to Japanator, this info was confirmed.  Half of me wishes I camped out like the nerd I am.

After a long day of exploring, I was able to catch the last leg of the Scion party with A-Trak ending his set and Dj Medhi beginning his.  Had we read the flyer, we would’ve avoided the dude playing top 40’s “hip pop” on the rooftop pool.  Thankfully, the friendliest security at the elevator guided us to the beach club where the Scion party was held. Guestlist, bah who needs it. Friendly foreign girl wanting photo op with me? Why the fuck not, all in good fun. $20 dollars for two Amstel lights gave a slight hiccup to the fun.

The rest of the night involved trying to hail a cab back down to 9th and Collins from 23rd ended in failure.  We walked roughly 16 blocks down only to return back to the Lincoln Road for Sushi Samba.  One hour wait stated the hostess.  Final destination: Sushi Siam where our eyes were hungrier than our bellies.  Afterwards, we made it out to The Shore Club where we finally caught Rusko’s set.  A cab ride to the White Room lead to a mediocre night.  Despite wanting to see Alan Braxe, Roy Davis Jr., and the Juan Maclean, I was just not feeling the venue.

Saturday – When I am looking for you, I call your number, but I can’t get through…
Spent most of the day at a nearby friend’s pool at the Marriott on 2nd and Ocean.  Then made it out to Taverna Opa for excellent Greek dining and entertainment.  This is where our nerd juices were overflowing with joy.  We actually asked the cab to get us to Rokbar right when doors opened at 10.  Who does that?  A fan of MODULAR mothafuckin Records does, thats who.  Our zealousness yielded a mini camp out as doors opened at 11, not 10.  But the venue is beautiful, Knightlife, Kim’s and Dan’s set was amazing.  Nothing could’ve gone wrong with this evening.  Well except overdoing it with jager shots.

The trip concluded with a super early shuttle ride to the airport Sunday Morning.  Lethargic days and affordable eating, here I come.  See below for some highlight photos taken collectively by my friends and myself.  On a side note, Dan Whitford of Cut Copy was nice enough to take a photo with my friend, SK.

I arrived a bit close to 10pm and now regret missing out on Knightlife’s dj set along with Matt and Kim’s performance.  A brain fart lead me to believe 9:30 Club was opening at 9pm instead of 7pm.  But timing was just right as I arrived close to 10pm and after sorting out tickets with friends, we entered the venue.  Roughly around 10:10pm, Fred Falke’s remix of ‘Colours’ by Hot Chip was playing and alludes to Dan Whitford, Mitchell Dean Scott, Tim Hoey and Ben Browning heading up on stage to perform, better known as Cut Copy.

Being a complete n00b to music reviews, I thought it was a great idea to carry a printed excel spreadsheet of the tracks from In Ghost Colours.  Now I can only imagine how Dave feels lugging around a camera, a moleskin pad and getting stuck in a mosh pit as the end result of fantastic Aussie electropop.  Call it nervous preparation, but I’m just a stickler for playlists and being somewhat orderly.

The band commenced with ‘Hearts on Fire’.  If my memory serves me correct, they played that as an encore the last time around at 9:30.  By the time, the 4th single came on, Dan Whitford announced it would be a track from Bright Like Neon Love.  My nerd juices were overflowing with joy.  I was like “Guys, could it possibly be Autobahn Music Box?”  For those that haven’t heard this hidden gem off the debut album, please see this video.  My excitement lead to a bullseye guess.  Unfortunately, the crowd was not as ecstatic as I was.  Next up was ‘Sands of Time’, another hit that I secretively prayed that Cut Copy would perform.  “Sands of Time” was not released on either albums and much like ‘Autobahn Music Box’, receives a lot of playtime on mine and my homegirl SK’s iPod.  So it was a definite treat to hear a live rendition.

For one reason or another, the crowd this time didn’t have the same level of energy as seen at the Black Cat and the last Cut Copy show with the Presets.  That is until the Dan Whitford asked if DC  was ready to get our dance on.  From tracks 6 through 14 ending with “Lights and Music”, the crowd went pulled a 180 and everyone was getting into Cut Copy.  At one point, a patron was seen crowd surfing from center left nearing the stage.  So even with a less receptive crowd towards some songs, dare I say another 3peat victory for Cut Copy?  I’d think so as do the not so gentle 6′3 and above giants that blocked my homegirl’s and my view.  Many Thanks to 9:30 Club for hooking it up, and be sure to check out www.930.com for a list of all upcoming shows as well as keeping it locked to Killahbeez as we will continually have ticket giveaways in conjunction with the 9:30 Club.

On a different note, Cut Copy’s US tour will continue down South all the way to Miami’s Ultra Music Fest.  However, those that would rather avoid a massive like environment should head down to Rokbar for Onitsuka Tiger’s party which also features a Cut Copy as well as Presets dj set.

For this week’s Mixtape Monday, I came across a double headliner mix via Asian Dan.  Rob da Bank introduces two of France’s most influential men in electronic music.  The first hour is covered by the producer with the golden touch, Fred Falke.  Ed Banger’s frontman, Pedro Winter, covers the second half of this 2 hour mix.  For the most part, Fred Falke’s set consists of tracks he’s gotten his hands dirty on.  Per Busy P and Rob da Bank’s dialogue, his set consists of mid to downtempo favorites for those in favor of afterparty music.

Its a hard toss up between which mix I enjoyed best.  Fred Falke is an overly confident dj/producer that loves to play his own work live.  No hate here folks, I get ecstatic every time I see a new mp3 with Mr Falke’s name all over it.  But the minute I keyed in “overly confident”, the name, Dillinja, immediately came to mind with a chuckle to follow.  Then there is Busy P who experimented all across the board.  I wanna say his is the best because he introduced  Bullion, whom I would’ve never knew existed.  Then towards the end he busted out with some Masters at Work steez.  Yo Pedro, Why didn’t you play “Runaway” instead???

This week’s Mixtape Monday is from a party out in West London that takes place on the 2nd Friday of every month at The Westbury, the name of this party: Dance on Glass. The latest party that took place had Breakbot playing what he plays best, disco grooves and funk. To help promote the party the Dance on Glass crew released a Breakbot Disco Mini Mix. This mix may only be 26 mins long, but its got some great jams on here and the vibe is steady throughout, constantly making you say to yourself ‘OHHH SHIT!” and wishing that you were at the party that recently took place. Here are some artists you can expect to hear him play on this mix, Mr. Oizo, Cut Copy, Pnau, Ladyhawke, Black Kids, Stardust, Metronomy and SebastiAn to name a few. Breakbot Disco Mini Mix

A few months back Modular Recording artist and Killahbeez favorite, Ladyhawke, held an open contest on her MySpace page inviting producers and DJs to take a stab at remixing her song “Back of the Van”. The competition has since ended and although I don’t think a winner has been announced, here’s an entry from Lajer & Kartik also known as ddpesh. The Brooklyn based duo has remixed a slew of artists such as Cut Copy, MGMT and Chromeo to name a few. Their latest remix of Ladyhawke’s “Back of the Van” is easily one of the dopest that I’ve heard so far and trust me, there’s’ more garbage then dopeness out there. Give the remix a download below and hear it for yourself.

This weeks Mixtape Monday is by no means a new mix, in fact it officially dropped in January of 2008, but it’s waaaay too banging to not share this gem. NLLR (No Love Lost Records) is a mixtape project that works with up and coming artists and occasionally established ones as well to bring music fans exclusive mixes. The project has now seen over 1.25 million downloads since 2007, pretty sick number. This particular one is done by Anoraak, who is one of Killahbeez’s favorite artists, part of the VALERIE crew. He’s also done some of the dopest remixes out there as well as releasing the mini-album Nightdrive With You, which has some ridiculous jams on there.

This mix is a good representation of the mans’ style of music and quite frankly I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since it was sent to me by my cousin.

Here’s the latest remix from The Golden Filter. The first remix that we posted from them was of Cut Copy’s “Far Away” track and I have to say that remix is by far one of my favorites of that particular song. Well this time they’ve remixed Peter Bjorn & John’s song “Lay It Down”. Check it out below and give it a download, the beginning is a bit slow but it does pick up a bit, so wait for the vocals to kick in.

Couple of dope new jams for y’all to check out. The first comes by way of atek, yes I admit, I finally like a track that you sent through…I ked I ked. The song is “Day ‘N Nite” by Kid Cudi, but this version is remixed by Fool’s Golds own Jori Hulkkonen. The track is featured on a 12″ vinyl that is available now for a limited time and I have to say this is a must cop as it has Chromeo’s remix of Treasure Fingers “Cross The Dancefloor”. Check out Turntable lab to cop that. Jori Hulkkonen’s remix is definitely bangin’, dare I say better then Crookers remix?

The next track is “Solid Gold” from up and coming group The Golden Filter. They’re definitely going to gain some massive traction this year, everything they do is pretty crazy. Check out their remix of Cut Copy’s “Far Away”.
