This past weekend saw Rock The Bells make a stop in Vancouver, taking place at the great outdoor venue, Deer Lake Park. There was an air of sadness surrounding the event, before it even started, as early that morning I found out that Baatin from Slum Village had passed away. Currently there are no details on the matter, we’re not sure if something happened en route to Vancouver, or in Vancouver. Nonetheless, respects to a legend, R.I.P. Baatin.

Respectively folks in attendance weren’t sure if Slum Village would still make their scheduled performance, but 2:30 rolled around and there they were, T3 and Elzhi, coming out and putting on a great show for everyone, performing all the classics, then taking a moment to remember their friend. I definitely can say I had chills during the whole time, just seeing these guys putting on a brave face and performing hard was nothing short of amazing.

There were a few changes in the lineup, as Canadians have come to expect when attending a hiphop concert. Customs can be a bitch to get through or in some cases not get through. Early in the day we were told that Pete Rock wasn’t going to be there, as well as K’Naan, Big Boi and KRS-One. B-Real was brought on to help Supernatural with hosting, but that was scraped and instead fans were treated with a full on performance of classic Cypress Hill joints. RZA was also added to the bill and he brought up Ol’Dirty Bastards son, he had a frightening resemblance to his father. Reflection Eternal had initially canceled as we were told by Livenation staff, but at the 11th hour, Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli made it to the stage and performed a slew of songs, but honestly did anybody hear any Reflection Eternal songs? I’m pretty sure they just did all Talib Kweli’s songs, correct me if I’m wrong here.

The final act saw Nas and Damian Marley together on stage, each performing their respective classics and essentially amping the crowd. Everyone pushed in closer and closer to the stage to try and catch some pictures, video or to simply take in the moment. It was a great way to end the festival.

Although our bill wasn’t as great as the original announced line-up, there’s no doubt that it was still a great festival. Check out a few of our pictures below and hit our flickr page for more pictures, lots more.

Official video for KiD CuDi’s “Make Her Say” dropped yesterday on MTV. The song features bars from G.O.O.D. Music family members Kanye West and Common. If you can’t tell the sample it’s off of Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face”. “Make Her Say” will be on CuDi’s debut, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, which drops in September.

Bloated Penguin posted the HD trailer for the fourth Terminator movie in March. Today, I came across a Myspace video posted on Common’s blog featuring Common and Director McG. Common (Barnes) and McG discuss filming the next  installment of the Terminator film, starring Christian Bale (John Connor). “Terminator Salvation” opens nationwide today. Are you going to see this film?

If you’ve grown up in the same era as me then there are a few entertainment and television pillars you probably base your life around. There’s “Knowing is half the battle,” the theme song to the original 90210, thinking Three’s Company was just funny and not brilliant at an early age, and then there’s this little show that basically changed the way I looked at the world. That show was The A-Team.

I won’t go into too much of a summary of the show – basically a bunch of ex-military specialists become free agents and start saving the world, but I will let you know that a movie is now in the works with a couple of recognizable names already rumored to be attached.

First up, the infamous BA Baracus played perfectly by Mr. T in the original series is rumored to be played by Common. This news has been floating around for a while now, but as of today, nothing has been officially confirmed. The next unconfirmed cast member would be Bradley Cooper (the guy from The Hangover and the guy who played Sack in Wedding Crashers). The rumor around Cooper is that he’s been contacted to audition for the part of Faceman!

A-Team is being re-envisioned by Joe Carnahan, the brain behind Smokin’ Aces and Narc. Keep an ear to ground for more info on this 80’s classic as it comes to the big screen.

Three brand new bangers to take you out for the weekend. I believe this Eminem track, “3 A.M.”, is the next single, not 100% sure as its a leak, but CD quality nonetheless, banging beat by Dr. Dre as well. The other track I came across that surprised me is the Lenny Kravitz track, “Let Love Rule” remixed by Justice. No news on the track at all, but it was just posted this morning on Lenny Kravitz’s website as a free download.

Rock The Bells 2009 lineup was officially announced yesterday and its looking nice. No actual dates and venues have been announced, but we do know that the tour will stop in the following cities below, hopefully this time Vancouver actually gets it, unlike last summer it was moved at the last second down to Seattle. If you’ve never been to Rock The Bells its a pretty amazing experience for a hiphop head and I was lucky enough to attend the New York show back in 2007. The above video shows what Supernatural does best, so peep it as he freestyles the lineup. Oh and if you haven’t been to RTB, its worth it just to see Supernatural freestyle in between every act, you know how much of a vocab you have to have to do that?

If you were one of the ones that didn’t get to venture down to SXSW, this includes me, which I am now kicking myself for. Then you missed out on one of the hypest shows that went down. Levi’s and Faders tent featured Kanye West, Common, Kid Cudi, Erykah Badu and the rest of the G.O.O.D. Music family members. Exactly a year ago we reported that Vodka brand Smirnoff was teaming up with Hip-Hop cats and remixing classic joints, essentially pairing up the songs original MC and teaming them up with some of this generations dopest producers. The first one that dropped was the KRS-One  & DJ Premier track “Criminal Minded ‘08″, that was followed up with Common & Just Blaze “The Light ‘08″ and the third and final installment of the series for 2008 was the  Q-Tip & Cool & Dre joint “Midnight ‘08″.

Well the series is BACK for the ‘09, except this years version is different than the last. Instead teaming up MC with producer, they’ve teamed them up with another vocalist. The first track has Nas doing “If I Ruled The World ‘09″ except this version features Marsha Ambrosius. The follow up to this will be Buckshot and Canada’s own Kardinal Offishall redoing “I Got Cha Opin ‘09″ and the third in the series will be Nice & Smooth with Pac Div doing “Funky For You ‘09″. Here’s the latest video from Kanye West and features Kid Cudi as well, for the single “Welcome To Heartbreak”, which comes off of the latest Kanye album, 808s & Heartbreak. The video is directed by Nabil, who’s previously worked with Common, John Legend, Will.I.Am as well as Kanye on his video for “Champion”. When I first saw this video I was trippin’ cus of the effects, I thought it was the download feed, but then I quickly realized this is the same technique that Chairlift used for their video “Evident Utensil”, which was posted last week. Coincidence? Let’s hope so. The technique used is called “Data Moshing” where the images get pixelated.

Circus Diplo remixes Britney’s “Circus” from her most recent album, Womanizer. Obviously, the video quality lacks substance but the sound is incredible.

Lastly, Mark Ronson produced the latest track from Daniel Merriweather’s Love & War album, called “Change” featuring hip hop artist Wale.

Are you planning on attending the Inauguration in Washington, DC? Look no further, I have provided a list of parties, concerts, official balls and unofficial balls.

There will be many (as in hundreds) of events including DC’s night life throughout the week but the hottest tickets in town, besides the official Inaugural Ball, will have special celebrity guest performances. The festivities kick off with Jay-z’s Inaugural Party at Love on Friday.  The biggest show will be on Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial, We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. The party will take place on Friday.

NEW YORK — If you thought the Golden Globes was a party, just wait until you see Barack Obama’s inauguration. Next week, Washington will look a lot like a colder version of Hollywood.

Here’s a roundup of who will be where, keeping in mind that in the mad rush to D.C., schedule changes may occur.

THE BIG SHOW

_ On Sunday, tradition will be upheld with a free star-studded concert on the National Mall, starting at 2:30 p.m. Among the many performers: Bruce Springsteen, U2, Beyonce, Usher, Garth Brooks, Stevie Wonder, John Mellencamp, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, Josh Groban, John Legend and James Taylor. Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III and Queen Latifah will read. Obama will stop by and HBO will broadcast “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial.”

WHERE’S OPRAH

_ Winfrey will host a live episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” from the Kennedy Center Opera House on Monday. She’ll also host a second episode on Wednesday. Winfrey has not announced her plans on Inauguration Day.

WHERE’S SPIKE

_ Spike Lee will appear at a daylong symposium at Howard University on Monday to discuss topics including the impact of Obama on Black America. Also there will be Rev. Al Sharpton, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Henry Louis Gates. Lee will also host an after-party Tuesday evening.

OTHER CONCERTS

_ BET will hold an awards ceremony, the BET Honors, Saturday at the Warner Theater to honor Mary J. Blige, filmmaker Tyler Perry, Ervin “Magic” Johnson and others. Gabrielle Union will host and performers include Queen Latifa, Ne-Yo, Anita Baker and Joss Stone.

_ The Hip-hop Caucus will host a concert Saturday at Ibiza with Common, Mary J. Blige and Nelly.

_ Jessica Alba will host a kickoff event by youth voter initiative Declare Yourself on Sunday dubbed “A New Birth of Citizenship.” Maroon 5 and DJ Samantha Ronson will perform.

_ “Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future” will be held Monday night at the Verizon Center and air on the Disney Channel. Performing will be Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and Bow Wow. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will host with their families.

_ The “America Feels Kinda Cool Again Inaugural Gala” will feature the Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow and Citizen Cope on Monday at the 9:30 club.

_ Jay-Z will perform a concert “In Concert on the Eve on Change” at the Warner Theater on Monday.

_ Aretha Franklin will play a free concert at the Kennedy Center with Nuttin’ But Stringz and the Let Freedom Ring Choir on Monday.

_ Manifest Hope will finish a three-day-long, Inauguration-themed art exhibit with a party featuring performances by Santogold, Moby and De La Soul.

THE OFFICIAL BALLS

_ The Neighborhood Ball: ABC will broadcast this ball for Washington residents at the Washington Convention Center. Performing will be Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill and Mary J. Blige.

_ The Youth Ball: This ball is for people aged 18 to 35 to celebrate “the role young Americans can play to serve their communities.” After announcing and then junking a similarly themed ball, MTV will broadcast it. Fall Out Boy is among the acts attending.

_ The other eight official balls are: the Home States Ball, the Commander in Chief Ball, the Biden Home State Ball, the Mid-Atlantic Ball, the Western and Southern Regional Ball, the Midwest Regional Ball, the New England Ball and the Southern Regional Ball.

THE UNOFFICIAL BALLS

_ The “Dreams of My Father” American Scholars Inaugural Ball will take place Sunday at the Four Seasons and feature Alicia Keys, Macy Gray and LL Cool J.

_ The Voto Latino Inaugural Party will on Sunday include Marc Antony, Rosario Dawson, Tony Plana and Wilmer Valderrama.

_ The Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball will take place Monday at the Harman Center and be hosted by Russell Simmons, LL Cool J, T.I. and Young Jeezy

_ The Huffington Post Preinaugural Ball will be held Monday night at the Newseum and feature performances by Sting and will.i.am. Attendees will include Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington, Shakira, Jon Bon Jovi, Halle Berry and Ashton Kutcher.

_ The Green Inaugural Ball will be held Monday at the Portrait Gallery and be hosted by Al Gore.

_ Muhammad Ali will attend the Kentucky Inaugural Ball on Monday at the Marriott Wardman Hotel.

_ The nonprofit arts and entertainment advocacy group Creative Coalition will hold a gala to be headlined by Elvis Costello and Sting at the Harman Center for the Arts on Tuesday. Also attending will be Anne Hathaway, Spike Lee, Tim Robbins, Maggie Gyllenhaal and others.

_ The Purple Ball, Tuesday at the Fairmont Hotel, will be hosted by Lou Gossett Jr. and Il Divo will perform. Expected to attend are: Ashley Judd, Patricia Arquette, John Cusack, Tim Robbins, Ed Harris, Ashley Judd, Josh Lucas, Amy Brenneman, Brendan Fraser, Susan Sarandon and Lisa Marie Presley.

_ There will be two American Music Balls: The Legends Ball, hosted by Dionne Warwick and featuring Chaka Khan and George Clinton; and the Urban Ball _ hosted by Ludacris and featuring Cedric the Entertainer and Monica. Both will be held Tuesday at the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel.

_ BET will host an inaugural ball at the Mandarin Oriental hotel Tuesday. The network will broadcast an hour special to coincide with the ball, which will include a performance by Wyclef Jean.

_ The Equality Ball, hosted by the Human Rights Campaign, will be held Tuesday at the Mayflower Hotel with appearances by Cyndi Lauper, Melissa Etheridge and Rufus Wainwright.

_ The Inaugural Peace Ball, Tuesday at the Smithsonian Postal Museum, will be hosted by Harry Belafonte and include Joan Baez, Graham Nash and Jackson Brown.

_ Rihanna will perform at the Recording Industry Association of America Inaugural Ball to benefit Feeding America on Tuesday.

Here’s something dope from one of my favorite online mags, Format, they always have dope shit over there and this is no different. They went ahead and recreated 20 classic Hip Hop album covers in LEGO! Yes, you read correctly, LEGO. Pretty awesome recreations actually and pretty bang on. The photos were taken by Nick Hanekom with styling and art direction by Jaici Chen and layout and design by Glen Manucdoc. Below are a few of my favorites.
