For those of us that may have missed Art Whino and Tagur Footwear’s Inked Soul exhibit, Vimby recently has posted up a video.  The clip  highlights what patrons should expect from the exhibition and the endless possibilities on  Tagur’s signature shoe, the AKA Blanks.  After the two minute clip, I was left wondering how easy or difficult it would be for any layman to customize their own pair.  And after hearing a quote like “The consumer is the producer” coming from Tagur’s owner, Wesley Williams,  it definitely wouldn’t hurt to give it a shot.

Art Whino will be bringing Inked Souls back this year on Saturday, April 18th.  The exhibit will feature more art and photography and run through May 9th in Crystal City (Arlington, VA).

In conjunction with Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) and Tagür sneaker company, Art Whino will offer incredible exhibitions of customized sneakers, paintings, and photography.  Each artist will feature one pair of customized AKA Blank Tagür sneakers along with a painting.

Four photographers will be featured whose subject matter rangers from 80’s Breakers to customized semi trucks.

The event is FREE and open to the public. Music by Black Cats Resident DJ Lil’, including a special live performance by Big Benz from TTM Entertainment.

Art Whino presents Skin Deep. In this exhibit Jason Snyder explores our glossy exterior and how it is used to hide the person and feelings beneath what is superficial. Jason examines the struggle between the internal and external personae and the motivation for the great lengths we go to cover what we perceive as unattractive about ourselves.

So I came across the opening reception for Stencil a bit late.  By late, I mean PaperMonster had already given me a link to the pics.  The good thing is this Sunday, the author of Stencil Nation, Russell Howze, will be available for book signings, a one presentation and panel discussion at Art Whino.  And the exhibit will be displayed through December 6th.  Off topic, if you missed the opening night, you’ve also missed a great set by Sean aka DJ FACE.  Come by Sun Lounge on Saturdays if you wanna indulge…

Immediately when I came across this mixed medium piece, my first thought was where I have come across those eyes before.  It didn’t take too long to recall that PaperMonster had several pieces displayed at Art Whino some time ago.  The above stencil painting is an ode to Samus of Metroid appropriately named “The Return of Samus”.  Having seen PaperMonster’s previous work, I’m confident enough to say anyone must see this piece in person.  The I am 8-Bit show commences this Thursday and continues onward to Sunday, September 7th.  If you happen to be in LA, mark it on your calendar to attend this event.

Yuri’s Night ‘08 – World Space Party
Join Art Whino for an OUT OF THIS WORLD experience as we celebrate Yuri’s Night, a World Space Party commemorating Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, and the first human space flight. Yuri’s Night is like the St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo for space. It is a day when the world comes together to celebrate the power, beauty, and party potential of space.
So dress yourself in your best celestial attire (prizes awarded); come see an art exhibition of other-worldly magnitude, and enjoy a Vodka of space themed libations by Stoli Vodka. Cosmic burlesque performances featuring Miss Saturn, spaced out Russian-style post-punk music by Mr. Moccasin, spacey DJ sets, and more will temporarily elevate you from your daily earthly existence.

Performances by: Miss Saturn, Gilded Lily Burlesque, L’il Dutch & selected scenes from Landless Theatre Company’s Space Battles the Musical will orbit throughout the night, hosted by the enigmatic Master Uranus.

“Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet. People of the world, let us safeguard and enhance this beauty — not destroy it!” Yuri Gagarin, 1st human in space.

Art Whino has been blessing Old Town, Alexandria with quite the numerous amount of exhibits.  This particular event is an ode to the first man in space and orbit the Earth, Yuri Gagarin.  This event also marks Art Whino’s first time extending its hours to 2am.  For more info, make the leap to www.outofthisworldparty.com.  I’ve never made it in time for the music portion of any Art Whino exhibit, but the installations are worth seeing.

Unlike your usual Art Whino event, this one costs a bit of change and falls on a Saturday.  But with the $20 advance/25 at door cover, not only do you get to see a visual treat by Ted Kliman, food and wine is included.  Well at least you get 3 drink tickets for a samplings of Robert Kacher wines.  I’m not certain what edible samplings will be offered by Bastille.  But overall, for 20 bucks for the early birds equates to a great evening of food, wine, art and music.  Please contact susannah@artwhino.com if you want in on pre-sale tickets.
