I recently took a weekend trip to Portland with my friend Christina to attend the inaugural WeMake conference. It was only natural that we shopped and ate to our hearts delight over the course of our short and sweet time in the rad city. While I wasn’t as prepared as I usually am for trips, there was one store I knew I had to visit whilst there—Johan.
Nestled in a residential area on the southeast side of Portland, Johan is a lifestyle concept store housed in what used to be owner Laura Housgard’s living room. The store is minimal in its design and basically an Instagrammer’s dream thanks to its white walls and cute greenery. Housgard stocks a number of goods—jewellery, vintage clothing, ceramics, handbags, and so forth—by Portland designers, as well as designers and artists from abroad. Such designers include Sea + Pattern, Frances Lab, and Vancouver’s own Karen La.
If you happen to be in Portland, be sure to stop by Johan at 1907 SE 12th Avenue and say hi to Laura (she is an absolute sweetheart). But if that’s too much of a distance, check out Johan’s online shop and thank me later.
