Here’s a random fact I learned on the Internet this week: culottes were originally worn by women in the Victorian era so that they could more easily ride on horseback. It’s the wide-legged pant that almost looks like a skirt (if you stand with your knees squeezed real tight). Ladies of the bygone era wore them so they could actually sit properly on a horse rather than riding side-saddle. How revolutionary!
While we haven’t relied on getting around on horseback since the invention of the car, these culottes are worth copping. Made by New York-based brand Rodebjer, the Mina Denim features a high waist and loose, wide legs. A raw hem gives the culottes a vintage, DIY quality.
While many women might shy away from cropped, wide-legged pants (not the most flattering), it really depends on how you style it.
Play with proportions—pair the culottes with cropped tops and more form-fitting tees. While some sort of heel, even if it’s a platform, looks best, don’t be afraid to pair this with chunky sandals (a la Birkenstocks) or sneakers. While the weather’s cool, the cropped hemline is a good excuse to show off your favourite socks.
The Rodebjer Mina Denim culottes are $262 over at Pixie Market.
