On a recent browse-through of Soundcloud, I came across Erased Tapes Records, a London-based independent record label that specializes in avant-garde music. Think Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm, and it turns out that both of them are signed to Erased Tapes. While there was definitely a lot of great, moody music, it was Douglas Dare who caught my attention first.
Douglas Dare is a singer-songwriter and pianist based out of London, England. Working with producer-cum-percussionist Fabian Prynn, Dare recorded his debut album, Whelm, which will be released on May 12. Based on what he’s released, I expect it to be full of moody, somewhat glitchy ballads. At times, Dare sounds like the hybrid child of Fyfe, Rufus Wainwright, and James Blake, mixing hypnotic beats and smooth vocals with the sweet sounds of a piano.
If you’re wondering where to start, I’d go with “Nile” to get a taste of the glitchy beats Dare gravitates towards. “Scars” is another fantastic track where Dare’s talents shine. Its soundscape is simpler than other tracks, but this lets his vocals and lyrics shine alongside the gorgeous melody of the tune.
Can it be May, please? I am so ready to hear more from Douglas Dare.
