This year’s top ten mixes is no different from last. A bit of dubstep, a bit of disco, a locally sourced mix and overall good aural delights. Thanks to soundcloud surfing, there is no shortage of good mixes, but these are ten that will keep me going until the next year rolls around.
Last year, I was turned onto the sounds of Max Cooper. Simply put, his Transitions mix was a cinematic treat without the visuals. This year that recognition goes to Berlin based Christian Löffler. Have a listen to his contribution to the ongoing podcast known as Take Off Your Shoes.
LWE Podcast 176 – Youandewan
This is another one of those mixes that caught me off guard this year. I’m not sure how I stumbled upon Youandewan, Little White Earbuds and his interview, but this podcast is in rotation at least twice a week.
Osmose vinyl mix – Dem Can’t Stop Wi
Folks its rare that I post anything outside of house, minimal techno and occasionally drum and bass. This mix by Osmose aka John Bailey would be the exception.
Drone and Illogic – Epitome of Sound 2013
Rounding up the top ten mixtapes of the year is a drum and bass mix by local celebrities Illogic and Drone aka Sean Lowder and Jason Guidry. The dudes curated an hour long of liquid funk, which will re-invigorate the love for this sub-genre. And if you weren’t already a fan of liquid funk, you may find yourself grooving to this mix after hitting play.
Marcelo Mendez – Deeper and Deeper 129
I classify this as a pleasant surprise from the soundcloud feed. I forgot which account I follow that had liked and reposted the 129th Deeper and Deeper podcast, but its a good blend of nu-disco and nu-deep house aka what some of us would’ve referred to as tech house several years ago.
Every Little Thing 48 with Fishing Vest and Eames
Eames is the in-house dj for clothing retailer Millionhands. For this ongoing podcast series called Every Little Thing, the formula entails one mix by him and one from a guest. The result is nearly two hours of solid tunes. I personally like Eames commentary during the second half.
L’Aquarium Aquatape No. 4
SoundSam’s remix of Spaceship (by Triangle Sun) as the intro is a good enough reason to continue listening. With some familiar and not so familiar tracks, this is a mix bag of quality traveling or relaxing wherever you may be tunes. The Aquatape series is in my opinion worth following on Soundcloud.
Superbreak – Supersets 07
I discovered Superbreak’s all vinyl set while trekking to Smoke and Barrel for some muddy rub goodness. Interestingly enough while reading up on Mr. Ellis, I added grilled octopus to my queue of craving for food items I haven’t had in ages. If you all remember my post back in April, this one is for the disco lovers.
Fact Mix 366 – MK
MK is a legendary producer and dj. Having seen his guest mix while scrolling through Fact Mag back in January, I was excited like a little kid at Toys R Us having discovered a Master Piece edition Transformer. Ok so that would never happen, but this mix did and its worth grabbing. Thats if you like bonafide deep house.
DCult – Fabriclive x Chestplate mix
This was going to be a recent mixtape mondays selection, but I somehow got distracted and posted something equally amazing. So if you’re wondering why this made it on my top 10 mix to end the year, its because I felt there should be a proper dubstep mix in the top ten list. Thats it. This one is short and sweet at 38 minutes long.
