Last night, Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno of Best Coast rolled into town and played the Rio Theatre, which was pretty packed considering it was a Monday evening. And what better way to spend a summer evening than dancing along to Best Coast’s summery lo-fi tunes…
The band is still on tour to support the release of their second LP, The Only Place, which was released last year, and naturally, their 20-song set included a great mix of their biggest hits, slower jams, and a handful of new songs.
After a audience singalong to Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” that played on the loudspeakers, Best Coast finally walked out onto the stage and with a quick intro from Bethany, they kicked things off with “Goodbye” from their successful debut, Crazy For You.
It seemed that the Vancourites really like Bethany because she got quite the number of gifts including flowers, cards and a joint. When in Vancouver? Bethany also really seemed to like her chants and broke out in a few over the course of the set. There was a “JK LOL” one and a “West Coast, Best Coast” one as well. But what got the most audience reaction was when she asked the audience if they liked cats, to which they responded with loud cheers.
With the addition of some new yet-to-be-released tracks, those in attendance got a little taste of what Best Coast have been up to aside from touring. An EP is set to be released next month and if the title track, “Fade Away,” is any indication, there’s more depth in the vocals and more variance in terms of the sound.
Set highlights included the LA duo’s ode to California, “The Only Place,” and crowd favourite, “Boyfriend,” which ended the night on a high note. We sang, we danced, and we yearned. All in all, it was a fun evening so thanks to Best Coast for bringing the Californian sunshine and heat (literally — it was roasting inside the venue) to Vancouver.
