J. Crew celebrated the opening of its second store in Vancouver last night, and Killahbeez was there reppin’. The new location, which opens to the public on May 22, is a womenswear shop only (J. Crew’s menswear can be found at their Robson Street store). So to celebrate the arrival of more J. Crew in Canada, I list my top-5 must-haves for spring/summer 2013.
Button-Front Dress is Roller Girl
The first J. Crew sales associate I spotted at yesterday’s opening was rockin’ this dress, and we talked about how it was the perfect dress for summer. It’s got a classic cut—the buttons down front and flared skirt give it instant polish. Meanwhile, the zany print makes it young and fresh. The dress can be dressed up (with heels and a bright clutch) as easily as it can be dressed down (think canvas sneakers and a denim jacket on weekends).
Marina Mini-Wedge Espadrilles in Chambray
Everyone raves about J. Crew’s ballet flats, but I have my eye on these supes cute chambray mini-wedges. This is the perfect day-to-night shoe for summer—ideal with trousers or a pencil skirt to the office, and great with slinky sundresses at night. The 7/8” heel is just the right height to give you an itty-bitty boost, but comfortable enough to run around in all day long. While the shoe also comes in a bright coral hue, I love chambray because it goes with everything—even jeans.
A good crisp blouse never goes out of style, and the short sleeves and tropical pattern on this particular number makes it ideal for wearing on sunny days. The palm-tree print was inspired by ‘50s silk scarves, and the shirt itself is made from super-soft silk charmeuse. While many women shy away from wearing “nude” hues, believing it will make their complexion appear “washed out”, this particular shade continues pink undertones, meaning it’ll give you a lovely glow and will pair with just about any other color.
Crystal Feather Necklace
Because every girl needs some major bling, this statement necklace will add the finishing touch to every plain and simple summer outfit. I love the oversized “diamonds” and the neon pops of color set against a heavy gold chain. While wearing this bold sparkler with a knockout dress is obvious, I prefer mixing high and low by throwing this necklace over a white t-shirt and denim cutoffs.
Polka-Dot Linen Short
If you had told me I would want a pair of pink and white polka-dotted shorts, I’d say, “My dear, I’m far too old to wear stuff like that.” But somehow, J. Crew makes a pair that is decidedly grown-up and sophisticated. The linen shorts sit flat against the hips and thighs, and the waistband is finished with a half-bow detail, meaning the shorts are just as flattering with t-shirts and sweaters tucked in or not. For a truly “I just walked out of a J. Crew catalogue” feel, don’t be afraid to mix pattern with pattern—a classic striped top will only add to the pattern-happy effect.
