Returning to Vancouver last night was Denmark’s Efterklang in support of the release of the trio’s fourth album, Piramida. In addition to Efterklang’s three core members, Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer, and Rasmus Stolberg, the band was joined onstage by the very talented Katinka Fogh Vindelev on vocals, Martyn Heyne on guitar and Tatu Rönkkö on drums. Together, the six of them made some sweet, sweet music that soared through the Biltmore Cabaret.
In a sea of green light, atmospheric sounds filled the space and Efterklang opened with “Hollow Mountain,” which is also Piramida‘s opening song. Moving right into “Apples,” it became pretty clear that the trio’s additional live members weren’t just there to fill out the sounds. Rather, they added so many different layers to the band’s sound, turning songs into electrifying soundscapes. And with vocals like that of Katinka’s weaving in and around Casper’s, we were all reminded of how the voice such is a beautiful instrument.
The band flew through the majority of the songs from Piramida and interspersed them with a handful of the better-known songs from their earlier albums, including “Step Aside” (Tripper) and “I Was Playing Drums” (Magic Chairs).
Before the last few songs of their set, the band took a short repose as Casper read out a few notes written by concertgoers at Efterklang’s Portland gig. This writing of notes for the concertgoers of the next city is super cute and kind of made me love this Danish band a little more.
The pace was picked up again as the recognizable intro to “Raincoats” started up and the audience immediately joined along with rapid handclaps. Soon after, the band went into “Modern Drift,” which is my favourite song of theirs and it was simply magical. The lush harmonies and sounds melded together so well, and the joy heard in the song was seen on the faces of both the band and the Vancouver audience.
If you didn’t make it out to the Biltmore last night, you missed out on an amazing performance by these Danes. They are certainly going to be in the running for best live show I’ve been to this year.
Efterklang’s North American tour continues till the end of the month. For tour dates, check the band’s website.
