I just hopped on the Chet Faker train and it’s been such an awesome trip. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this guy until now! Apart from repeatedly playing the new Local Natives album, I’ve pretty much had Chet Faker on repeat since finding out about him last week.
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Chet, whose real name is Nick Murphy, first caused some major ripples in the blogosphere with his cover of Blackstreet’s hit, “No Diggity.” And remember that little thing called the Superbowl? Well, this Aussie certainly got a huge amount of exposure this past weekend thanks to his cover being featured in Beck’s Superbowl ad for their Sapphire beer.
You’re probably wondering about the name he records under, right? See, when Murphy first started playing under his real name, there was another guy with the same name and of course, confusion ensued. And so, it was time for a name change. Since Murphy is a fan of Chet Baker, he went with Chet Faker as a sort of ode to the late great jazz musician.
Anyway, I’m jumping all over the place with this but what y’all need to get is that you should be listening to Chet Faker. I’ve posted “I’m Into You” below as a starting point, so do yourself a favour and get educated Chet Faker-style.
