British duo, AlunaGeorge, are certainly ones to watch this year. Since “Your Drums, Your Love” hit the web last September, the buzz surrounding the duo has grown exponentially. They were the most blogged about band in the UK last year and they’ve were just announced as runner-ups for the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll, in which music critics and industry members decided of the most promising talent of a given year.
Consisting of singer Aluna Francis and producer George Reid, AlunaGeorge formed in 2009 after Reid had contacted Francis’ previous band because he wanted to remix them. The two ended up releasing an EP called You Know You Like It and subsequently, they signed to Island Def Jam Records.
On paper, there are a lot of similarities between AlunaGeorge and Purity Ring. Both are male/female duos – the male being the producer and the female being the vocalist. Both have got sweet vocals combined with sick beats. But where the two duos differ is their sound. AlunaGeorge has more of a RnB feel to their tracks. Francis’ voice floats over Reid’s lofty beats and together, it makes for some superb pop music.
Have a listen to AlunaGeorge and I guarantee you’ll be listening to them non-stop afterwards.
