Even though I haven’t headed back to school at the start of September for many years now, the start of fall still gives me an excuse to do some “back to school” shopping. There’s nothing like stocking up on a fresh pair of jeans, new jacket, and a cute standout number like a dress or skirt to get you through the next couple of months. This vintage-inspired mini circle skirt complete with suspenders has just enough pep to rival any cheerleader’s uniform, but also a touch of sophistication when paired with just the right accessories.
The Weave Me skirt by Cameo looks like wool but is actually made of polyester. What I love about it is the bright, almost neon, mustard color, which sort of stops you from looking like you borrowed someone’s private school uniform. The snug waist band sits high on the waist, and the skirt juts out for a circled hem effect. Suspenders are criss-crossed in the back.
The key to styling such a skirt is to maybe forgo the plain button-down collared shirt in order to look a little less schoolgirl and a little more grownup. Try a lacy top, like the model, to keep things sexy, or if your look is more “school of rock”, slip on your favourite worn-in band T-shirt for a disheveled irreverent look. Another option would be to wear a striped dark turtleneck underneath for a nerdy-girl librarian look. When the temperature drops, slip on a pair of wooly grey tights underneath and a pair of suede dessert booties or ankle booties on your feet. If you really wanted to throw on a beret for a total French schoolgirl look, nobody would complain.
The Cameo Weave Me skirt is $139 over at Need Supply Co.
