On Wednesday night, the 11th season of American Idol went out with a two-hour
variety show finale to crown Phillip Phillips (yes, the man with the same first and last names) as its winner. If you were looking to get your music-TV fix the following night, a new reality show singing competition debuted called Duets.
The premise of duets is sorta one gigantic mishmash of a bunch of other singing competition shows. The show features four professional singers/mentors: John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, and Jennifer Nettles from country band Sugarland. The four singers travel across America looking for two duet partners each, who will perform with them in front of a live audience on each show. At the end of the series, the singer left standing will win a recording contract with Hollywood Records.
Duets is hosted by Benjamin Quddus Philippe, better known as Quddus, a Canadian VJ on MTV Canada. While, there were a few exciting moments on the first episode, such as when Robin Thicke performed his hit “Lost Without U” with hottie contestant Olivia Chisholm, most of the two-hour long premiere was a snooze-fest. There’s a reason why this show’s been scheduled to run during summer, until American Idol and The Voice get back up and rolling.
I say, if you’re looking for a little singing competition over the summer. Hit up your local karaoke joint. At least there’ll be booze.
