I wonder, is Jean an actual Taiwanese name? Because I now know of two great artists out there with the surname Jean – artist James Jean and now pop singer Jerry Jean. Try not to mix them up even though it’s easy to; the latter even links to the former on his website! I suspect Jerry Jean must get people mixing up him up with James Jean fairly often and it’s easy to do so as Jerry Jean is so new that even Google doesn’t know who he is. Lucky for you, I got your back.
Born in Taiwan, but NYC raised, Jean is by trade a professional vocal coach helping singers hone their voices as they move on to careers in music, Broadway, television and film. After years of helping others hit it big, it’s now Jean’s turn to take a stab at the limelight.
With his smooth vocals and flawless piano instrumentals, Jean is already steps ahead of his peers as he quietly amasses an impressive online catelogue of covers, duets and originals. It’s immediately apparent that this guy is a professional and he has the street cred to match, having won numerous singing competitions and even being on the music faculty for NYU! His mix of jazzy pop music is so easy to listen to I shudder to think that probably me AND my parents could enjoy blasting this on the car stereo. Not a good thing. Yet even though part of me wants to press stop, another part of me finds itself irresistibly seduced by Jean’s catchy hooks and before I know it, I’m foot-tapping and humming like a fool.
Now while Jean’s music is catchy, one thing you must do when giving him a spin is to close your eyes. Just trust me, check out his videos – but do not watch them! This is going to make me sound real bitchy, but if you watch his videos you may just get turned off by Jean’s visual presentation. The guy is like an American Idol contestant pre-makeover. Fantastic voice, but seriously needing an image redo. Jean looks like someone my parents would set me up with and he sounds like something my parents would like, but I have a feeling this guy is so much more. Is it really shallow considering today’s sexed up, image obsessed music culture to say something like this? I think not. Sorry kids, video truly did kill the radio star and musicians these days need to look the part just as much as they sound like it.
However, if you enjoy feel good music as much as I do and you want to give shallowness everywhere a good kick in the balls, then get swept up by Jean too by checking out his first EP: Fighting For You on his website. Don’t say you haven’t been warned. Shower singing is thoroughly encouraged.
