It’s snowing, it’s freezing cold, the days are short and dark. What’s a girl got to do to brighten up?
Pick pieces of clothing in summery fresh floral prints, starting from the ground up. Hit Urban Outfitters for a pair of Rose Stripe Plimsoll sneakers. Casual, comfy, cheap (the three Cs) and adorable, these will be a hit with skinny jeans starting … now. If you can wait a few months to actually wear them, head straight to the Kimchi Blue Canvas Quarterstrap wedges. These would be perfect with a solid coloured floaty frock.
Now, I couldn’t find any flower patterned pants (but I know they’re out there!), so let’s skip ahead to dresses yes? If we’re dreaming, we might as well dream big.
Appropriately named, the BB Dakota Magdalena Secret Garden Dress is a well balanced blend of purples, pinks and greens. The neckline is a fashionable V line and the waist is neatly cinched.
Not to be outdone, Betsey Johnson has the Midnight Floral Ruffle Show dress made in silk and featuring short puffed sleeves. Nice touch. I like the ruffles on the skirt too.
Flower prints come in structured dresses too, like the ABS Floral Print dress. It has short capped sleeves and a whide neckline. This is a great dress for a more conservative office. Also loving the Havana printed silk satin dress from Marc Jacobs for the same reason. Think Miami and cruises.
Grab an adorable scarf to throw on with any outfit and immediately brighten it up with a flash of flowers. I love the Kimchi Blue Floral Fringe scarf from Urban Outfitters, which looks like a water-colour garden. Lovely!
I’m noticing the prints to rely more heavily on bright, strong colours rather than pale patterns this year. This can be overdone, so make sure the colours used in the prints won’t quickly date themselves and are appropriately complimentary. Also, avoid prints that won’t match any shoes you can think of. And personally, I always avoid micro patterns. They seem to look dated really quick and aren’t as fresh as the larger patterns.
There is always an exception, like the Girl. by Band of Outsiders floral print twill tank. Cute to tuck in with a pencil skirt or leave out with skinny jeans, this flexible top can plough its way through the seasons.
The plants aren’t sprouting, but that doesn’t mean your wardrobe can’t.
