It’s been awhile since I’ve heard some really good, down and dirty, girl pop. What happened to the good ol’ pop girls like Natalie Imbruglia and Meredith Brooks? Frankly, it would be nice to see some genuine women out there who aren’t flashing their coochies every second they can. Enter in Louisiana native, Lelia Broussard. If you’re big into youtubers, you may have seen her videos; if not, then don’t worry – you’ll be hearing her name soon.
Lelia sings sweet, pop-rock tunes in a time when other pop tarts are singing about chains and whips. Her smoky Southern voice is frankly refreshing, as is her laid back attitude. On her website, Lelia eschews the typical name-dropping bio and instead delights her fans with tasty tidbits like these:
-she once had 15 cats
-moved to New York when she was 17
-buddies with Stefani Germanotta (a.k.a Lady Gaga)
-used to be an egg (weren’t we all?)
Take a look at her track list, and you’ll begin to see that Lelia is not just another girl with a guitar. Sure, her songs deal with love and relationships, but what about a song about a robot in love, or an ode to “hipster bitches?” Not your usual “Women & Song” fare right?
What with putting her music online and touring hard throughout the U.S. Lelia is on the verge of stardom. She is currently in the finals for Rolling Stone’s Choose the Cover contest, where 16 competing indie artists fought for votes to gain the grand prize of being on the cover of the August issue for Rolling Stone Magazine. Voting closes July 1, so check out her music and go vote!
