Album Review: Matt Costa Mobile Chateau

Matt Costa’s latest effort, Mobile Chateau, is definitely a throwback to the mid 1960′s, early 1970′s. I love it.
Most Costa fans know him for hisĀ folk-pop, Jack Johnson-esque style (Costa is actually signed to Johnson’s label Brushfire Records, hence the similar sound). Where as his first album, Songs We Sing, was pretty pop heavy, his second album, Unfamiliar Faces was a little more raw in a folk-rock-ish way. His latest effort is psychedelic folk. And it’s awesome.
According to a press release about the album, Costa states that he’s always been drawn to the psychedelic sound of the 60′s. He ads, “I’ve been hearing songs like these in my head for my whole life and Mobile Chateau is the closest I’ve gotten to getting those songs out of my head and onto a record.”
Each track is amazing. When I hear “Can You Tell Me”, I envision hippie’s with braids dancing around a bonfire. Various tracks (such as “Johnny’s Love of Majik” or “Witchcraft”) are peppered with the happy-go-lucky tambourine and then in “Bleeding Hearts” there’s this majestic horn that draws you in. “The Secret”makes me feel like I should be slow dancing in a school gym and “Drive” makes me feel like I should hop on a bike and go for a ride on a sunny day while smiling happily about nothing.
This is a great album and the fact that Costa decided to stray from the norm makes it even more special.
