After meandering through crowds of greenly clad individuals hoping for the luck o’ the Irish to get them some ass after many a green beer, I finally made it to my usual spot at the Commodore to see one of my fave bands: Dragonette. The show was great: they sound just as good live as they do on album.
I got to the concert in time to catch most of The Manvils set. They were…nothing to write home about. They weren’t bad or anything, I was just indifferent to them. They’re a Vancouver band who’s been around for a few years. Check them out on their website.
I was pretty stoked to see Dragonette seeing as how I missed their Fall 2009 show in Vancouver. Despite not being able to make it to their show I did get to interview leading lady, Martina Sorbara. Read the interview and see photos by DT from the Fall 2009 concert, here.
Dragonette took to the stage at about 10:40. Martina came out, sans the ”Militina” I was hoping to see (the “Militina” is what she called her short hair cut – read my interview with her). Her hair has morphed into more of bob a la Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or even of The Beatles. Still cute. She was wearing these interesting tights that were that faux stretch leather in the front and then regular matte tight fabric in the back. She paired the funky tights with a short sleeve sweater, which I’m not sure if it was white or pink, couldn’t tell with the lighting. She was also wearing one of those cool three finger rings that are in and hot right now. Only faux pas of her outfit were her shoes. They were lace up, man shoes circa the Victorian era. I guess they go with her style, but I can envision so many better shoe options. I’ll get over it, can’t hold something so trivial over someone so awesome.

They opened with “I Get Around”: oldie but goodie. They had these cool light bars behind the stage that changed colour, flash intervals, etc., throughout the night. I think the light bars totally suited their electro-pop music and style, so props goes to their set designer.
I have to say, at first I was kind of worried about the acoustics. There seemed to be too much bass and not enough treble: Martina’s soft, yet sassy voice was being overpowered by the music. This problem was quickly resolved and Martina proceeded to hypnotize us with her voice.
You probably think, that I think, that the rest of the band is chop liver and that I’m in love with Martina. Well, the latter is true but not the former. She’s the leading lady, she’s going to get the most attention. This being said, I could only see bassist Dan Kurtz from where I was, along with their mixmaster who was hiding in the wings of the stage. Kurtz was smiling the whole time. Seriously. I don’t think I caught him looking indifferent, let alone frowning, once. Good on you mate.
As for the crowd, look I get it was St. Patty’s but seriously….what could be better than being at a Dragonette concert on St.Patty’s? Even Martina said, “I’m really excited you guys are here. I saw the lineup at Doolins Pub. I saw it. What’s going on in there aside from green beer? I don’t know.” During some of the slower paced songs, there was a lot of chatter from the crowd sitting around the dancefloor. And to add insult to injury, the group of people sitting in front of me left half way through the show. Might I add that they were ripping it up for the first half. So why leave? You look like you’re having the time of your life.

Martina also made a few mentions of how big and intimidating the venue was. They’re generally used to playing in smaller Vancouver venues. I find this hard to believe. Vancouverites, what’s wrong with you? This is Dragonette! Wake up! Let the good music smack you in the face…trust me, you’ll like it!
Dragonette is currently touring across Canada, be sure to check them out. If not, well…you’re missing out!
