Saturday, October 18th Vancouver got to experience a taste of awesomeness known as Dragonette when they stopped in town at Venue. This was the third or fourth stop on their North American tour which was announced earlier this month. I have to say before going into the show I had developed a slight kindergarten crush on Martina Sorbara and her voice and I was not disappointed in the live aspect of it all. It’s hard to describe this woman, as she seems to have a vortex about her that draws you in, whether she realizes or not. A fan yelled out “You’re so cute!” and her response, a brief stage dance to get everybody laughing.
Their set started off with the single from their first album, “I Get Around”. I’m sure you’ve heard of it and not even realized it. Being that this is a fan favorite it was only natural that the folks in the venue cheered and sang along with Martina. For their set performance the band had gone back and forth on songs from their debut album and latest effort, Fixin to Thrill. From the debut album they performed the aforementioned “I Get Around”, “Take It Like A Man”, “Black Limousine”, “Competition” and “True Believer”. Full set list is below.
The night ended with the song “Fixin To Thrill”. The song started off on this heavy spacey synth sound that wasn’t recognizable, that is until the guitar riffs came in and everyone realized what was about to played. The place went off. When the song ended folks just didn’t want to leave and cheered for an encore and after a few minutes they received one. The band performed a song that’s on neither album and I thought I heard Martina say it was one of her songs, but I’m not completely sure.
As for the pictures below, the venue we were shooting in is quite dark and they have potential for great lighting, but clearly opt not to use it, hence the majority of my shots turning out black & white.
