Issue #600 for Archie Comics and the gang from Riverdale should be a monumental event. They’ve been toying around high school for decades now and reaching this milestone should be something epic, something worth celebrating. Well, I don’t think the gang of writers behind Archie Comics have truly grasped this. In an effort to create some buzz, the creative team behind Archie have decided to end the the saga of the original three-way love triangle in a storyline that involves Archie proposing to Veronica!
Lets step back a bit and talk a little about what this actually means. First up, the tension, conflict and general uncomfortable-ness (I don’t even think that’s a word, but I’m not in a proper mental state right now) was always the heart of Archie. No matter what situation the gang from Riverdale was in, the question was always who Archie would choose, Betty or Veronica. It was a timeless question, but now…?
Here’s a breakdown of each and why Archie should never decide:
Betty – the blond bombshell with a heart of gold. Sure she comes off a bit ditsy at times, but she makes up for through a simple innocent look that makes Archie’s heart melt. She’s warm, smart, has a good sense of style and she was never bashful about her feelings for Archie.
Veronica – the steaming hot temptress comes with that look that makes you wonder how far you could push some of the weird stuff in the sack. I wouldn’t call her dirty, but I always got the sense that Veronica was much more experimental – like I wouldn’t be surprised if she one day decided to see what it would be like to kiss another girl. Anyways, I’m pretty sure Archie agreed.
The problem I have with the decision to get Archie hitched isn’t the fact that he’s chosen Veronica, it’s the fact that he’s chosen at all. It reminds me of Friends when Ross and Rachel got together, there wasn’t a lot to look forward to after that. Maybe the Archie creators are looking for a spike in sales, or maybe they’re setting us for something crazy, but the fact of the matter remains, Archie is getting married….

I always found Betty’s “golder heart” kind of boring… nothing like Ronnie’s sense of humor and “naughtiness” to make me laugh. I’m happy with Archie’s decision, but honestly, I doubt it will be something permanent. Probably after this “what if” number, we’ll get an “archie marries Betty” Issue.
