Latest Obsession: Ristorante Paradiso

For this week’s Latest Obsession, I want to fill you all in two of my favorite pastimes: food and anime.  And Natsume Ono’s manga turned anime, Ristorante Paradiso, fits the shoe for both categories.  It’s a new slice of life series that started airing this month on Fuji TV.

Centered around Ristorante Casetta Dell’orso, the 11 episode series is about a young lady named Nicoletta, who travels back to Rome to reunite with her mother.  At an early age, Olga (moms) left Nicoletta to be with Casetta Dell’orso’s restauranteur, Lorenzo.  Which brings us to the present where Nicoletta is hunting down this hole in the wall soon to be discovered hidden gem of a restaurant.  Upon arrival at Ristorante Casetta Dell’orso, Nicoletta discovers how charming the restaurant and it’s staff are.  The seasoned waitstaff, sommelier and chefs are so well mannered, well dressed and all don a pair of glasses.  Not to mention the images of mousse cake and anti pasto has your author salivating.

Much like the cast of Friends hanging out at the Central Perk coffee shop, Nicoletta becomes a norm in no time.  Eventually, she even picks up a gig working at Ristorante Casetta Dell’orso.  Without revealing too much, this is the first anime I’ve enjoyed watching that involves food and is slow paced, yet doesnt get boring.  After seeing a scene around the 14:55 mark when the head cameriere, Claudio, changes into his work attire, I’ve developed an appreciation for the fine art of waiting tables.

Watch the first two episodes here at Crunchy Roll.
