Twilight will be releasing on DVD and Blu Ray later this month so I figured it would be a good time to drop some thoughts on what I thought of the flick. First things first, and I should really get this out of the way early so no one feels like I’m not legit. I read Stephanie Meyer books. I wouldn’t call myself a fan of her style, a fan of the genre or even a fan of Twilight, but I read whats out there because its enjoyable and doesn’t invlolve a lot of thinking. I compare reading her stuff to watching Family Guy – it doesn’t take a lot of brain power to absorb, but when analyzed it’s actually pretty damn good.
So back to the review. For the 4 people out there that haven’t heard of Twilight, here’s a rundown.
New pale girl in town is the talk of the high school
All the dudes fall over her except one, super heartthrob boy, equally as pale.
Pale girl becomes interested in pale boy after pale boy saves her from being run over by a mini-van.
Pale girl discovers that pale boy is a vampire, but falls in love with him anyways
Pale boy can’t get too close or he might eat pale girl, but falls for her anyways
Pale boy’s family of vampires only eat animals
Real human eating vampires show up and get a whiff of pale girl
Real vampires hunt pale girl only to be stopped by pale boy
Pale boy and Pale girl dance at the prom…..
Okay, so I’m no Stephanie Meyer, but that’s more or less the gist of it from my standpoint. In comparison to the book the flick is much different in terms of length. The obvious call out would be the 15 minutes it takes pale girl and pale boy to fall in love. In Meyer’s book this happens over the course of a few chapters. The film was also shot in a way that really played with the emotional state of the audience. With smart lighting and a minimum reliance on special effects, you can get a really good sense of what the characters are thinking at all times. The one interesting dynamic that I thought was an improvement from the book was pale girl’s relationship with her father. Meyer tends to spend a lot of time explaining the hardships of growing up in a divorced family – the flick takes care of this over time and by the end you really feel badly for pale girl’s pops.
The movie was entertaining. Think of it as a cross between something you might see on the Family Channel and a really good episode of Buffy. Filled to the brim with teenage angst and uncertainty about the future, Twilight really shows that high school kids contain that element of blind trust that creates for amazing drama. With the sequel already green lit you should probably get in the know if you haven’t already.

I was marginally satisfied with the film. I think it was a better adaptation than Watchmen.
I guess I really forgot to put that I liked the film.
