Anyone else get super-excited to see the announcement of an “HD” trailer? Okay, that’s pretty lame, but in this day and age we’re always looking for more screen resolution to take advantage of our thousand dollar televisions right?
Anyways, Terminator: Salvation released a brand new HD trailer the other day on Yahoo and my initial reaction is… wow. First things first and we’ll get it out of the way. Bale is fine – dude had a bad day and we should be over it. Something also tells me that the floating text in the new trailer that reads “Forget about the past,” wasn’t just an ironic fluke either.
The trailer itself looks great. McG (terrible name aside) seems to “get it.” Terminator isn’t a story about Arnie terrorizing a city with a bunch of guns – at its heart, the Terminator mythology speaks to a crowd that understands the risks of technological dependence. Much like the Watchmen when it comes out, the story mixes supernatural occurrences in with real life character development and reaction. Obviously terminators and Skynet aren’t real (or are they? Apple just keeps on making life lazier…) but heroes like John Conner are. They are the people that take what is given to them and make an honest decision to change the world.
The trailer as it stands really captures the grit of the world if machines had taken over. There isn’t a lot of color anywhere and the stoic cement and ruined city backdrops work well with the color of life to show a major disconnect. A few things to watch for would be the terminators themselves and Bale losing it (as John Conner this time) because of a frustration brought on by machines.
To put it bluntly, imagine is you had to work/live/obey a VCR – wouldn’t you be a little pissed – all the time?
