As mentioned earlier in the week here’s the review for the RZA concert that took place on June 25th at Richards on Richards in Vancouver and presented by Sealed with a Kiss. Official tour name is “The Digi Snacks Tour” and it was insanely energetic from beginning to end.
The night kicked off with opening act soul band Stone Mecca, a 9 member band with literally 4 or 5 strong singers as they rotated off the lead throughout their set. Performing their songs “Come Home”, the soulful “In Love” where one lucky gentlemen was being sung to, “Strugglin”, “Life Music” and their track off of the Afro Samurai soundtrack “The Walk” amongst other songs. Their set definitely had the crowd vibing for what was next.
A brief moment later Stone Mecca came back out on stage, this time accompanied by the RZA. The crowd went bananas when they saw the man come on stage and he didin’t disappoint by kicking the show off and lyrically killin the crowd. He did the joints “B.O.B.B.Y.”, “N.Y.C. Everything”, “Love Jones”, “Domestic Violence” amongst others from the Bobby Digital album. Off of the Digital Bullets album he peformed “La Rhumba”, “Glocko Pop” and “Brooklyn Babies” to name a few. During the begining of the set his mic cut out a few times but the crowd was so into it that they would be filling in the lyrics for him, as one girl I met that night referred to the peeps in the crowd as his “Wu-Tang Choir”. From his new album, Digi Snacks, he rocked some of my new favourite joints “Long Time Coming”, “You Can’t Stop Me Now”, “Straight Up The Block” as well as “Booby Trap”, “Good Night” and a grip of other tracks off of the new album, which I have to recommend all RZA fans to pick up, in my opinion the best album he’s dropped so far.
In addition to killing it and droppin his own songs, he rocked classic Wu-Tang bangers, “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthin Ta Fuck Wit”, “Shame on a Nigga”, “Clan in Da Front”, “Proteck Ya Neck” which then lead to the joint “Tearz”. As you can guess the set then went to a moment of dedication to the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The song “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” dropped and eveyone went crazy, while I just chilled in the cut remembering one of my favorite MCs and some of the illest songs he dropped. Return to the 36 Chambers is still on heavy rotation for me to this day.
Despite the few mic problems, this show was still great. It was energized from begining to the end and the RZA did not disappoint one bit. Easily one of the best concerts I’ve been to in the last little while. Big ups to Sealed with a Kiss for the invite, check out their website for more information on their upcoming shows, www.sealedwithakisspresents.com. Trust me these dudes are killing it in the promotion game and bringing some top notch acts for the Vancity crowd.
